What Envelope Filter should i buy?

Ahhhahahahahahaha...recommend me a filter.

Sorry dude, if it were only that simple. I love my Russian Bassballs with the external trimpot mod. I like my Qtron+. I like the AF-9. Not a big fan of Boss filters.

The problem is that, like both Fasto and Bassmike said, they have a clear voice and the differences are subtle and very personal. One man's 'I hate that filter' is another man's 'This is the best filter in the history of electronics!"

Good luck. I suggest you seek out clips, when you hear some of a filter you are interested in, then try it out in a local store if you can find it close by.

I've been using a Groove Regulator (not the GR2) for a while and it has ended my filter search. It's simple to use, sounds amazing and plays well with all of my other effects. You should be able to snag a used one in your price range as well.

Mine too. It does the Bootsy Collins wet-and-bouncy sound very well, and is extremely versatile.

I am afflicted with Xerograph GAS, though.... lucky me I don't limit myself to one filter at a time:)

The only way to suggest a filter to you is to get an idea of what type of envelope filter tone you're looking for.

Since I don't know what tone you specifically want I'll just suggest the Source Audio Bass Envelope Filter. You really ought to seriously consider the Source Audio BEF. The range of filter tones you get for $120 is truly outstanding, and it's easy to recreate tones after you've dialed them in.

Thanks for the Source Audio suggestion; just need to find one in a local store to try

Under $150 I would get the Source Audio BEF and not even have the think about it. If it is your first filter or only filter it covers the entire filter spectrum and sound better than many I've tried for $200+. Don't let the Digital factor fool you into looking elsewhere.

My filters that I have owned from Amazing to good are:

Mutron-Source Audio BEF-EHX Bass Microsynth-WMD Fatman-MXR M82-3Leaf Groove Regulator-Chunk Systems 00 Funk-EHX Mini Qtron

Out of all those the GR gets the most love here. The GR is greatbut not all that wet. I'd call it one of the fattest. I think the BEF can make any filter noise I've ever heard and has the most possibilities without contest.

Currently own a Mutron (for sale cause it's too big, no clean bypass, and for me only 1 sound I really like) and have had both a 2-knob and 3-knob DoD
I agree that the GR sounds really good but not wet enough, and, in my limited testing felt the same about the MXR

Don't really need (or want) space sounds; just controllable wet funk with a clean bypass (something the Mutron does not have). Likely candidates for me sound like EH Enigma (although big and won't run on a battery) Maxon AF9, EBS IQ, or Source Audio; have you guys found the SA in local music stores

You get more bang for the buck and more options with the Source Audio BEF. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE MINE!!!!

I also have a MXR BEF. It's a close second. I'm too lazy to pluck my Source Audio BEF off the pedal board to share, but I did a clip of my MXR BEF for you to hear. Since it was sitting unloved in the gear locker, it was an easy one to grab. I'll probably do a clip of the Source Audio when I reorganize my board later this week sometime. PM me if you want me to link you to it.

MXR BEF

You can easily get the same tone with the Source Audio, plus many many many more. Please note, I'm just noodling here. For the first bit I'm playing clean. Somewhere around 2:40 mark I click on the wet. You can tell pretty easily. Best of luck in your hunt!
