What gear did you start off with?

My first bass was a Washburn 4 string, I don't recall the model but it had PJ p'ups. I bought it new in '96 along with a Peavey TKO115. Nice setup, sounded great back then.

Got a starter kit called "Axe" (£90 for the bass, made of plywood - even the neck!! - & a 10watt practise amp)that was advertised in Metal Hammer or Kerrang or some other similar mag about 20yrs ago. Bought a 50watt 1x15 Bass Baby combo from another lad in the 6th form, then spent 3-4 years at a friends house, terrorizing his neighbours with terrible renditions of Iron Maiden, Metallica & Rush

Newbies throughout the world want to know

i walked into the music shop, without knowing anything but wanting to learn bass.

i picked the black yamaha rbx170 bass on the wall purely out of looks and price, and got an SWR LA12 60watt bass amp judging from price.

no clue about gear! but i think i chose pretty good starting gear

I only started playing bass a little over two years ago, so I'm still using the gear I started out with - a Squier Affinity P-Bass and a Yorkville XM100 1x15 100W combo. I'm strictly a church player these days so my gear suits me just fine, although I am thinking of playing out in the future, so an amp upgrade will probably be in the works.

I still have the guitar I started my musical journey with, back in 1972 - a Yamaha 00 size 6-string acoustic guitar. They'll bury it with me when the time comes!

1979: Blonde Maple Japanese made "Carlo Robelli" P-bass copy (weighed a ton), and some $35 used combo amp w/ a 12" driver (not even sure it was a bass amp), but the brand was "Movin'", or at least that is what the front placque said.

A 60's Fender Japanese copy bass and a 15" Traynor bass mate. ..... 2/3-years later got a 66-Fender P-bass and a Marshall Stack, but eventually sold the Marshall and went back to the Traynor.

Four and a half years ago, I bought a Yamaha RBX170 in metallic blue. I wanted to get into bass, and that was the cheapest one available to me at the time.

It was a pretty good bass for the money.

I've never owned a bass amp as I've always preferred to run a preamp into my studio monitors instead, so I originally just played it through my PODxt, but within a month or two, I ended up with a Bass PODxt Live.

Used Kingston and an old Kay Amp. Neither lasted the first year. Replaced by a Vox Cougar and a Vox Amp. The Vox amp blew a speacker every couple of weeks so replaced it whith a Sunn.

My dad bought me a used Peavey T-40 and a early 1970's Fender Bassman 100 head with a 1x15 cab from Flood Music in Sioux City, IA. The only thing I still have is the warped neck of the T-40 hanging on my music room wall.
