What gear makes you look old?

I bake cakes cause its manly! and because cleaning the bowl with your face is one of the simple pleasures in life

ANY socks and sandles combo, but especially DARK socks with shorts of any kind. I know you said "gear" but I think your outfit says more about how old you are than your gear. Another killer is black jeans with white sneakers. It screems 1982. Any tucked in T-shirt. Pull that sucker out. Cut-off jeans shorts not only say redneck, but old redneck. Another thing that doesn't help your image is to wear a shirt with the logo of the company who makes ANY part of your gear. Save the Fender and Ampeg T-shirts (especially the black ones) for washing the car or grilling out. Any sort of knee or elbow brace that can be seen will age you by 15 years. Any gold jewelry around your neck. Sorry if I got OT, but I just think that your gear doesn't change people's impression of you NEARLY as much as how you look. As far as basses and rigs, most people in the audience don't know (and don't care) what you're playing. I'm pushing 40 and I get ID checked for beer all the time. I live in a college town and kids at shows always ask me "What 's your major?". It's all in how you carry yourself.
BTW, I'm a 38 year old electrician and I PREFER meters with needles. Digital ones move around too much for me, especially when measuring ohms.

When it does come to gear though, to me it seems like the mid-era stuff is the 'old guy' stuff. Things from the 80s in peticular.

Yeah, things that went out of fashion but haven't come back in (and maybe never will). For example traditional Explorer-shaped basses without any extra pointiness, I'd think.

PK- When I started playing in the early 70's, I thought Fender basses were 'an old man's bass' because a lot of the country guys used them. Silly me.
And BTW, girls at the gig (young and not-so-young) pay no attention whatsoever to our bass & amp. Unless they're BassPlayers.

Trying to look like a young hip, curly locked skinny indie dude wearing a ratty T shirt, faded torn jeans and sandals! Or maybe leather pants with cut off sleeve shirts and playing about any instrument with a pointy headstock.
