What happened to funk?

I agree but the exact same can be said about most styles and genres of music.
When I say 'irrelevant' I mean that my musical reference points do not come from funk and that I don't listen to it in my own time.
For jobs, yes, when I'm asked to play it , I prepare, so I guess in those work situations it is not 'irrelevant' afterall :).
As to the question 'What happened to funk?'-I guess it has changed over time and hopefully developed onward somewhat.

I also love whenever people ask about funk, cuz I'm always excited to hear what Kwesi's listening to. Also, thanks for the shout out.

:scowl: With this attitude, it's a wonder funk is still hanging by a thread here in the US! By the way, Funk was quite relevant during it's heyday!

Funk (real funk) is still alive and well (kinda falls under rap & smooth jazz these days). Radio is the biggest culprit as they barely play any adult music at all! Kids making music for kids!

In addition, Europe and Japan have tons of bands playing funk (& jazz). They embrace it while we here, in the US, are allowing this music to fall by the wayside. Sad....just sad! The dumbing down of music continues!

We (U.S.A.) did this with the blues in the 50's/60's. Those sneaky Brits repurposed black blues into white pop~!

If you are of course, coming from the angle that the Brits
( alongside a couple others) started what is now known as the 'US' I guess you got a point.:D

Not sure if 'dumbing down 'is a fair assessment of what is happening at all, and what do you call 'dumb' in view and on the oposing side (it seems) of Funk, being as simple as it is.
If there is one thing funk is not it's intellectually stimulating(IMHO) and to me that is not what it's there for either.
(This is NOT meant as a negative in any way)
