What Happened to Prog Rock?!?!

checking out some of the suggestions: Litmus brought "meh" to a whole new level to me. Sounded just like another generic british punk rock band. Baroness was really cool, I'll be purchasing some of their stuff in the future.

Funny how tastes vary, I listened to Baroness and can't stand it. Yes, it's a little proggy but too much screamo-metal for my tastes.

Dig Porc Tree - very fun stuff.

Radiohead is clearly prog... And King Crimson still puts out albums...


It's out there, it just isn't on the air much - - If you have "Pandora", tell it that you want to listen to "Yes" and sit back. All kinda odd stuff will come out.

One could argue that most metal these days is pretty damn progressive. Sure, they use relatively common time signatures (4/4, 6/8, etc.), but good lord, they are very intricate rhythms and absolutely phenomenal syncopation.

Not sure if it qualifies as prog, but seeing the band cited I sense a certain openess... but I saw them live and they kick ass, sure its a bit too much about the guitard but the band is solid and it was a pleasant surprise

Try Hypnos 69, my favorite prog rock band out of the younger ones.

They're from Belgium, and their music is SO 70s prog, it's amazing.

Their album "The Eclectic Measure" is my favorite record ever. The bassist is also one of my main influences.

Mastodon has been mentioned a few times and I agree. I personally think the Neurosis is what Pink Floyd would sound like if they started in the 90's (you may want to start at Times of Grace to current before looking at their old stuff) and Amorphis, a band from Finland, is very Prog. I would start out with the album Elegy and go to current as they started out as a Prog/Black Metal band..... when they were in their early teens. Amorphis is a very talented group of musicians.

PORCUPINE TREE! Agree with the others: Deadwing, In Absentia and Fear of A Black Planet are awesome places to start. Lightbulb Sun is phenomenal as well.

Go to youtube and search out "Hatesong", "Blackest Eyes", the new clip of "Way out of Here". They are my top band right now. Going to see them in Dallas next week...cant wait!

What defines prog anyways?

I thought progressive music was just that; progressive. King Crimson, Yes, Pink Floyd have done their thing.

Prog today?

I would say the post rock bands like Mogwai, Sigur Ros, Explosions, even 65daysofstatic to be proggy. In their own way. I also really like the way Brian from the Silversun Pickups plays guitar, there's definitely something progressive in his chord and effect usages, IMO

Coheed, Porcupine Tree are good examples too. And definitely Tool I think they blazed a trail. Where metal bands typically riff harder and faster, Tool just flips the formula and attacks you with soundscapes and ideas, and moods, and... GAHH now I have to go on a huge Tool kick for weeks. Tool is GREAT!

Prog isn't dead, it just smells funny.
It's still oyt there and there is good stuff being played, but Prog was never mainstream (Thank God) and so, just like back in the day, one has to look for it.
