His way of fretting, where you put one finger on each fret, has been very helpful to me and seems like something that many players neglect to do these days, despite its practical uses.
He played fretless
I come from an upright background and still use that fingering method. Either one works, it just depends on personal preference.
Jaco taught me a lot!
He taught me that bass can be a wonderful solo instrument with amazing sonic tones.
He taught me that bass could be a great reharmonizing tool because of the way he was using it for composing and writing.
He taught me that bass is a hell of a funky instrument and can be played hard physically and make it sounds easy.
He taught that bass is a wonderful instrument to arrange music.
He taught me that harmony and theory are important to become a real musician

He taught me that great technic help you to play what you hear.
He taught me that jazz knowledge is important.
He taught me that bass is THE instrument in modern music.

I see why he and Entwistle did what they did. You can jam like a fool on that stuff. It just aint worth it in the long run though.

Im STILL learning to play sober. Not easy, I still get bumed out sometimes.
Actually this is not true because Jaco did all his amazing stuff before he even touch drugs! When he did (thanks to Joe...........................not),things started to go bad for him.

+1 I don't think anyone can seriously argue that JP and JE owed their playing ability to drug use.

He did, but (according to the vid) when he practiced on his fretted, he played w/ the fingering method of fingering right by the fret.
I actually am doing my best to incorporate that in my playing as well... I do notice a difference in sound, but it really does help in transition to playin the fretless.
Thanks for all the replies, this how the thread was originally supposed to be. It's nice to see that so many have taken something good from someone (among all the bad things that has happened to the person) and applied it in themselves and/or their playing.

Dammit! I've been on the road for 4 days and I just saw this thread and I was going to say that, then I saw you said it. Foiled again!
I've only caught a few videos of Jaco online (and listened to Teen Town) but it's already reawakened in me the possibilities of playing on the high end. For a while I was learning a lot from other influences which stayed almost completely on the low end, but I don't think bassists should be wary of playing past the 12 fret on the D and G strings, if you can do it melodically like Jaco.
Your right, a person shouldn't judge in just one night... haven't heard much of any of his recordings before I saw the youtube vids, and that section of vids weren't the only ones I watched. I also watched the portrait of tracy and teen town w/ weather report vid too (good stuff!). It was merely an observation of mine when I said it looked like he was "showing off". Normally if you're showing how you're doing something and you do it in a fast manner, you slow it down... at least half the pace of how you normally do it... it doesn't seem like he slows it down at all, or maybe I'm so newb and his power rating is so high that everything he does is like instant transmission. 'Cuse my sarcasm, but was just making an observation. I do wish though, to look into some of his stuff, recordings w/ weather report, so on so forth, hear a lil' more of how his style incorporates w/ the band. Never did say he wansn't a great bass player at all, just have always been curious about seeing as how some around here completely worshipped him.
What is some of his stuff that I can/should look in to?
