what have you "ragequit" in real life?

Way back when I was 17 and worked at Wal-Mart (around 1987).

After closing some of the other stock boys would just get on the intercom and say "Hey (insert name here) meet me in housewares" instead of the proper protocol during regular business hours of call someone to pick up a certain line and then telling them.

Wal-Mart had a certain habit of finding a reason to fire staff in easily replaceable positions after they had gotten a raise and then hiring replacements at lower wages. They got sued for this practice later and lost, big time.

Well, some of the guys did that and got in trouble, I was not part of it. They told the manager this as well. He still wanted to write me up anyway. and as the door was locked (after close) he said he wouldn't let me leave until I signed it.

Being a 17 year old hothead. I suggested several places he could dispose of the the write up form, told him to open the doors (which included threats of bodily harm) and this was all also done in front of every employee waiting to go home.

Needless to say, that display counted as my resignation..

That's called hostage taking, and I would invite anybody in the civilian world to explain it to the cops right after I had called them. If it was really my lucky night they would touch me after locking me in, where they would receive an amazing lesson in self-defense :).

Peace,
Greg

I've rage quit on a few clients over the years for various reasons - usually having to do with them being both uncooperative (leaving gates locked, letting their grass get knee deep, not answering the door or phone, etc.) and unreasonable (not understanding why the job wasn't finished).

I haven't done it in quite a while, though. I can smell b.s. from further away than I used to be able.

I have. When I was in college I worked in an Italian restaurant doing prep work and such. One night my girlfriend at the time called me while I was at work, and told me that she called the cops because somebody was trying to break in while she was in the shower. I leave work in a hurry, telling the night manager that there was a robbery attempt at my house and I was going to see if my girlfriend was ok. I get there, talk to the girlfriend, she gives description to cops etc, and I get back to work. I look at my time card and the manager clocked me out, and docked an hour of my time for unexpected leave. I thought that was pretty ****** so I told her that I am leaving for the night (I was pretty pissed) she runs after me in the parking and tells me that I cannot leave since I am the only one in the kitchen right now helping the cook. That's when I did a donut in the parking lot and told her that I quit. The look on the face was worth it.

The closest I ever came to "ragequitting" anything was a job once. I made an honest mistake and because of it was told I would be losing all of my commissioned side work. This pissed me off enough to quit. My boss always stressed that should anyone ever want to quit (I see now why she stressed it so much) to be sure to give her two weeks notice.

The next day I gave her a signed note submitting my two weeks notice. She told me I could work until the end of the day. I went directly to my desk, gathered my things and walked out. Not very dramatic I know, but quitting anything is completely not my style. This was the only time I ever did.

The one that comes imemdiately to mind is this crappy job I had for about 4 hours when I was 19 years old: I'd been unemployed for a while, was getting desperate, answered a classified ad for "audio sales -- we provide free training!"

Turns out they were selling cheap car stereos out of the trunk of your car, and the "training" they provided essentially consisted of bogus psychology to try to encourage total strangers ("unqualified leads" as real sales people refer to them) to come at look at the crap you had in the trunk of your car.

So I sit through this stupid 2 hour training class, and then they send me out into the field with one of their seasoned pros (sic) to see how it's done, and after watching this guy pull this inane schtick on people who had no interest in buying car stereo whatsoever, and especially not from some slimeball who wanted to show them something in their trunk, I said to Mr. Slimeball "Sorry, this job is bullsh*t, I'm outta here" and I just walked away.

...so not so much a RageQuit as a RationalQuit!

Selling stereos out of the trunks of cars?! Was that company owned by the Crips or something? :eyebrow: I can't help but think of that skit on In Living Color about the Home Boy Shopping Network where the Wayans brothers are selling hot items out of the back of a van as though they're on QVC or something. I wonder how often the sales people were approached by the police while they were doing business.

In all seriousness, though, these types of outside sales and multi-level marketing gigs are the bottom of the barrel. I honestly don't know anyone's who's ever had a decent career doing that stuff.

We had a problem with people stealing shoes, but he wouldn't let me put the detector tags on them, even though we already had the tags, and the sensors installed. I was really unhappy, but trying to make improvements in the worst store in our district.

That's a typical story of a manager delegating responsibility without delegating authority. You don't need an MBA to understand that kind of stuff, but people who should know better still do it. Sounds like your DM was on a power trip. You're quit was epic, though, and I'm sure it felt good. :D

I'm pretty close to rage quitting my current job. I'm a projectionist manager at a movie theatre. I'm in charge of the booth, machines, and prints. I'm on call 24/7 if there's a problem, my employees are lazy and incompetent. our GM/ boss figured out that corporate doesn't know if he's here, so he never is. the place and machines are falling apart...... it's a disaster. BTW I've been with the company almost 3 years.

Did you work for the Homeboy Shopping Network or something?
