That'd put just about every symphony orchestra out of business...
it seems the majority of talkbassers are from USA and are in covers band. You don't see covers band gigging often over here unless you play in a wedding band.
sure - four out of the last six bands i played in played originals.
Backing out the whole pandemic thing, I would have to 100% love and believe in the music, and when it stopped being fun I'd be out.
All the same I wouldn't give up my day job (such as it is), because that originals band won't even cover my kombucha budget.

i'm trying to imagine a cover band called kombucha budget, and i can't imagine what kind of covers it would play...

I imagine a jam band, probably b/c I got turned on to kombucha whilst touring* Oregon in a rented VW Westie.
* Family vacation, not band tour.
at my age, a total waste of time. I have no interest in trying to "make it". Even if I was young, I think it's delusional. So few artists or bands really make it these days. even if you do get some fame, there's not much money in it. It's simply a poor use of your prime working years if you're looking at it financially.
and where I live, the demand for original music is virtually nil. I'd rather have fun, get paid and give the people what they wish. How many of you have headlined internationally for more than 10,000 people? I have and I've never did it doing originals. I just don't think it would be worth my time.

That would be great, actually. There should be a club someplace that only allows original music. I'd do it in a heartbeat. Until I moved away and got hitched, I was in a band for ten years that only played original music (aside from a couple of really stupid covers just for fun), and we had oodles of songs.
I would be miserable. I love my favorite hits. People who go to bars live their favorite hits. People like to celebrate to music. It reminds them of good times. It tugs at their emotions in ways few other things can. I'm not opposed to originals. But I can't imagine a music scene with ONLY originals.
Call me crazy. But I LOVE playing a smash hit in a bar when the crowd is singing so loud I could stop singing and they wouldn't know it.

You DID leave out the butts moving part, which to my mind is the hallmark of a successful gig.

I came up in the '70s New York City club scene and it was all-originals, all the time. Maybe 1 or 2 covers a set, and those were generally stylistic re-workings. To be sure, there we some retro trip bands, notably the then new Neo-Rockabilly, but these acts were going for something outside the norm rather than playing 'the hits.'
It was a damn exciting time with lots of great innovative players and artists (lots of bad ones, too!)

i think he meant that the same toons have been played for hundreds of years in some cases
I understand that for you your Time equal money. For me I prefer to feel happy and fulfilled
