Is it just me or is Talk Bass getting a bit weirder lately?
Back in the 90's there was this local trio that I used to sometimes play on the same bill with @ The Coconut Teaser called Mind Over Metal, or MOM. Dad played drums, young shreddy son played guitar, and mom played bass. I wouldn't call her skillset Jaco-level, but she was definitely the best bassist in that family.
All of the mundane, common topics have been covered ad nauseum. People get responses like "the search box is your friend" and whatnot because TBers get tired of hearing the same stuff rehashed. So, yeah... I welcome a little weirdness now and again. Besides, the pandemic is making people act loopy and I am no exception.
If my mum was better than Jaco I would work with her in some capacity, help her music career, and help my own career at the same time.

I'd play drumsOk, hear me out. You can still contribute if your Mom has long since passed away. Mine has. But let's rewind to back when they were with us and for those of you who still have a living, breathing Momma, be thankful for what you have.
But let's just say that one day, shortly after you started playing bass, your Mom decided to pick it up... and she just killed it. I mean within a matter of weeks, she was beyond anything that your young bass-playing mind could hope to comprehend.
Angels cried for joy in heaven as she executed ridiculously complex rhythmic passages and laid down funk so nasty, it would make Bootsy blush. So, you've got a few different ways you could react...
A) Decide that your Mom's interest in your chosen hobby has instantly made it uncool. "C'mon, Mom... This is my thing! Why couldn't you take up knitting or something?" and possibly give it up or
B) Just come to terms with the fact that the person who brought you into this world also happens to be a bass demigod who you will likely always be in the shadow of.
I know, I know... Asking the hard questions going into the weekend. But it was either this or another "what's the best bass for metal" thread so have at it.
If there's another way you could see yourself reacting, feel free to add.
I think so, and this has been a weirder-than-usual day on TB. But it’s entertaining, at a time when we can use a few extra chucks.
Things have been similarly weird over at TDPRI (Telecaster site) too.
It’s nice that pandemic stress is coming out as loopy weirdness rather than polarized angry hoo-hah.
I come from a family of musicians and it was never a question of ‘if’ I would play an instrument, more ‘what’ instrument I would play.
Mum played piano stupidly well, Step-dad guitar, Dad drums, older brother guitar (again to a level most people only dream of)
I was looking through a magazine when I was a young lad and said to my brother “I’m gonna play guitar... and I just saw the one I want”
He came over, looked at the magazine and said “that’s not a guitar!! That’s a bass!!” I said “what’s wrong with that?! I think it’s cool!” I had no idea what it even was, I just thought it looked good.
I got a bass (combined Christmas/birthday gift) unwrapped it and had a little attempt at playing it on Xmas day... really hard... had no idea how or even had the strength to play it. So I put it down.
my brother picked it up and starts slapping and popping and all sorts. Inevitable.
Step Dad picks it up starts playing some bass line to a song I don’t know, to much enthusiasm from everyone else. Fine.
Passes it to my Dad who proceeds to play some nice little walking bass line. Great.
It was pretty soul destroying and I reckon if mum had been next to have a go, I may very well not have been a member of this forum at all!
Thankfully she had the good grace to let me keep what was left of my pride in tact! Though I’ve no doubt that after I’d gone to bed she was shredding on it (I picture her more as a Billy Sheehan than a Jaco).

My Mom, by vocation, played in a symphony and is an excellent musician. Hates fusion with a passion, though.
