Sad how? Answering a new member's questions is kinda what people do here. Even elementary ones. And clearly some are having fun with it.

A delay can be used as a nice practice tool in early phase of playing. You can layer your playing with long delay times, so you can test intervals and harmonies and have fun. It's also a little bit like playing with someone. So grab a cheap digital delay and have fun.

At its base it's an echo. It can do a lot of other things though.
It's based on time not range so all delays work on bass.

One thing you can use a delay for on bass is to create a metallic doubling type of effect. It's sort of like a motionless chorus or stopped flanger. In fact it's kind of literally those things. You need a delay that can go super short. A DD-3 can go down to 12.5ms for example. It's subtle but it adds something cool that's a little less familiar than chorus. It just slightly weirdens your tone. There will be these little moments of chorusing when you slide to a different note or bend the note a certain way. Works really well if you play with a pick. You can dial in a few repeats to enhance it.
