To me it's like any other word that has virtually no useful meaning without some additional context...sort of like a dance, a party, a picnic, etc. Without a little more to go on the most you can determine with any degree of accuracy is the general nature of the activity, but certainly not its scope.

I try to have a versatile rig.

You can do the modular thing, Head, cab, extension cab when necessary.

My route is 1x15 200w combo for small gigs. DI for medium to large gigs.

I don't want nor need to buy loads of different of amps.

In terms of style, just configure your pedalboard for funk, metal, classic rock, or whatever you play. Simple

A gig is when you stand in front of people and perform. Play a tune, sing, present, act, tell a joke etc.

I have done gigs with FOH and no amp but I prefer to use my rig on every gig even, if I have FOH, because that gives me the same sound and feel on every gig. It's a consistency and comfort thing.

I can't gig with an amp that is not able to play a low B with authority.
The smallest cab I could find that fits this bill is the barefaced one10, and I gigged with that.
BUT.
I did so while having an armada of more powerful equipment at home.



I can see where someone would ponder the purchase of a smallish 110 combo as the first and only amp;
Someone young who is into loud music. This person absolutely can be told 'but you can't gig with that' even though the amp is sufficient for coffeehouse acoustic sessions.

I think one problem with responses to those types of threads is that they are so often answered from a “ ̶O̶n̶e̶ ̶ My size fits all” POV.

Another problem is that the questions so frequently don’t come with a full disclosure of the circumstances (which can be part of the cause of the "My size fits all" responses). Something that might help would be a forum rule, requiring completion of something like this…

You left off my favorite, and IMO the most useful question: acoustic percussion volume?

Obviously this doesn't apply when there's no percussion involved, and yes, I'm WELL aware of what it's like to have a trumpet blasting behind you, but typically a band's maximum stage volume should be tailored to the natural acoustic volume of their percussion.

What's enough rig for a gig? IME one that keeps up with un-mic'd acoustic instruments on stage. For a typical rock band = drums.

I love that you have to specify London, England in your profile. Even as a lifelong Ontarian, whenever someone says London, I automatically think of England. But I live on the wrong side of the GTA for London, Ontario to have much relevance to me. Even though I worked at London Life a loooooong time ago!

Not enough gigs for bass players around me... I just took a quick look at the Chicago C/L musicians section and entered Bass into the search..... there's more bass players looking/available for bands than needed for them...
I don't think I've seen so many bass players looking for bands on C/L.....
