What is a Lakland?

Seriously, I've only played Fender and Gibson basses and guitars - but what is a lakland? It feels and looks just like a Fender P. A guy at work has one for sale for $2000, model 44-6X. I cant understand why someone would pay 1000 more dollars for a bass that looks and feels like a P=bass? Are the pick ups and tuners the same as well? It sure looks it.

Here's a $1000 Lakland...

Once you play the Lakland, my friend, you will understand.

EDIT: I had written 'superior to Fender' but I'll back off that statement, seeing as it's my opinion and not fact...although I'm sure you'll agree after trying a Lakland out.

Yeah... while we're at it... what's with that Sadowsky Alleva Ford Coppola Guy? His basses look just like my Squire Jazz. Four strings and everything.

I know this is just a troll, but seriously... just in case it's an honest question:

Lakland's USA models have higher-grade woods and better quality control than many mass-produced American Fenders. They manufacture their own bass designs as well as "higher-end" versions of two popular Fender designs. Many companies produce "high-end" basses that look like Fender basses.

I know exactly what you mean. It gets worse, though. You don't even have to pay $1000 for a Fender P. They sell the same bass under the Squier name for $300 all day long. It, too, feels and looks just like a Fender P. The pickups and tuners look the same, as well.

Think about Fender Bass design------cutaways to reach frets and balance, a notch on bottom for sitting down playing, a belly cut for slinging it.........most basses have these things from a design standpoint........sure most are going to look similar.

Wood, Electronics, Hardware..........there's your difference.

Wow! You sure are getting slammed for asking a sincere question! I'll bet it kinda makes you sorry for asking. Rather than find fault with you like so many others have chosen to do, I will try to answer your question as best I can since I have owned US made Fenders and US made Laklands.

Simply put (and this is, of course, only my opinion), Laklands are superior in every way to their Fender brethren. Both are good basses, but Laklands are better made. To me, it's kinda like asking why a Ferrari costs so much more than a Porsche. Sure, they will both do a fine job, but one outdoes the other by a longshot. The craftsmanship is better with a Lakland, and the US Lakland necks are oh-so-nice! After owning US Lakies, I have zero interest in owning any Fender basses.

IMO/IME. YMMV.
