What is a Lakland?

Excuse my idiots. They're friends.

;)

The US-built Laklands are boutique instruments that command boutique prices because you're getting an instrument from a small run or one that's built to order for you. The woods will generally be of a higher quality than on an off-the-shelf Fender or Gibson, as will the fretwork. If you want a Fender that shows the same level of hands-on luthier time, you're going to have to go with their masterbuilt custom shop axes, which cost a tonne as well.

I don't buy the 'Lakland are the best thing since pretty flamingoes picked basses from the pond of bass magic' spiel, but they're very, very nice. For me, I went with a Skyline because I'm a freelance writer, so I don't make a lot of cash. And because of that, I'm not spending $4000 until I know I'll like the company's quality. From long-term experience.

I find that my 2008/9 Fender American Standard Precision V is also a very good bass, and is US-made (which honestly means nothing to me), and cost me 1500 Canadian dollars, but it's not going to be in the same range as a US Lakland or Sadowsky. It's just a well-made workhorse.

As for Gibsons, I used to have an early 80s (I think) Thunderbird that I found just too sexy, but these days Gibson kinda leaves me 'meh.'

Seems like there is a long list of people making this board look like a hangout for smarta$$es. The only way this could be a true troll, is if someone else responds and starts their crap. Then you got real troll action.....but one post....let it go man.

Check this out: from 12:16, 12:17, 12:21, 12:24, 12:25 a stream of crap just spewed from the keyboards of dudes who should be doing something a lot more constructive. Try telling to OP about the Laklands.....maybe practicing your instrument , learning how to transcribe a bitchin solo, share your knowledge with someone, or just minding your own business.

When you look back at some of these recent posts, you will see some regular guys who enjoy taking a swing at a troll or a newby, either way, it makes you the lesser of the two.

A Lakland is more beautiful than a beautiful, beautiful flamingo, flying across in front of a beautiful sunset. And he's carrying a beautiful rose in his beak, and also he's carrying a very beautiful painting with his feet. And also, you're drunk.

I don't know if the OP is serious or not either. I don't have any desire to know about Lakland because I have what I need to do my job the best I can do. To the OP: If you like Fender and Gibson, stick with what you like and live on. We're bass players, we'll never own everything.

Wow, Guys,
This is really sad.

Someone asks a question and you jump on him like Piranhas. I'm sure none of you have ever asked a simple question like this when you first started out. Sure hope you all got better answer that you gave the OP.

This board has really changed. :(

Wow! You sure are getting slammed for asking a sincere question! I'll bet it kinda makes you sorry for asking. Rather than find fault with you like so many others have chosen to do, I will try to answer your question as best I can since I have owned US made Fenders and US made Laklands.

Simply put (and this is, of course, only my opinion), Laklands are superior in every way to their Fender brethren. Both are good basses, but Laklands are better made. To me, it's kinda like asking why a Ferrari costs so much more than a Porsche. Sure, they will both do a fine job, but one outdoes the other by a longshot. The craftsmanship is better with a Lakland, and the US Lakland necks are oh-so-nice! After owning US Lakies, I have zero interest in owning any Fender basses.

IMO/IME. YMMV.

Yea, I should have know better to think this forum was different then the others out there, but I guess not. To me the trolls are the idiots that hide behind their keyboards, slam people for asking a perfectly legitimate question, and then feel proud of themselves for putting down someone.

But for what it's worth I appreciate the patients those have shown for the honest responses and pity the slammers (trolls)

How come the guy from Australia knew the Hummer county implications and you don't. Drunk is not quite spot on!! Think green growing region!
For a moment though please understand the OP not having a comprehensive understanding of why US Laklands cost so much. I like Skylines just fine, and don't see the upgrade value myself. I actually prefer G&L's over any of the aforementioned brands, but that is why we post on Talkbass to gain wisdom from the cognescenti about why we should pay a few thousand more for such special basses.

It is not usually like this. Lately however...... ..
There are some really good people on here. Don't give up on the forum yet. There are great people that will go out of their way to help you .....usually.
