What is a Lakland?

I like how mccartneyman put it once (I also used to have that as my sig., but unsupporting membership is rather limiting in signature length). I somehow feel it also perfectly fits the topic.
So,
"the best Fender basses nowadays are being made by Lakland" (c) mccartneyman

I'm pretty sure some of the flaming came up with the way the OP was put in words. I cross-checked just right now. I believe there would be less "fun" from the 'ole blokes if it were a mere question; but it implied some arrogant and ignorant judgement that, all facts taken, was, as someone above (jazznfunk?) put it, "not even funny".
However, to OP's honor, he reacted well and respectfully, and got more positive feedback in return.

Still, not much comment on the 'same tuners and pickups' question.
1. No, tuners and bridge (obviously) are different, although made by the same Hipshot corporation that makes tuners for american deluxe fenders (am I correct? Not an expert in Fenders). Also, tuners on 5-stringed models are different from the 4-stringed ones: they are considerably lighter to maintain better neck balance.
2. No, pickups are different as well. In fact, pickups and electronics are part of the Lakland legend.
As rayzak explained above, in the past the P -basses from Lakland came with Lindy Fralin pickups, which are considered to be high-end reproduction of fenderesque sound (at appr. 3 times the price). Other models came with, also boutique (think Fodera), Aero Instrument pickups, and so on.
The concepce of the awarded -94/ -02 series was a take on a cross between a Music Man and a Jazz bass (two jazz basses, to be exact, 60-ies and 70-ies variants, switched with a 3-position switch). However, it wasn't a clone and had a tone of its own. Good in active or passive mode, and unbelievably versatile, they still are the best selling Lakland models, according to Lakland themselves. They initially came with custom-wound Bartolini pickups and custom-tweaked Bartolini preamp.
Later Lakland introduced their line of pickups, currently four basic models being available (modern Neo (neodimum magnets); vintagey sounding ones; neodimum ChiSonic - the earthshakers; and the ones for the 94/02 basses). Lakland/Hanson inhouse preamp is great too.
Lakland being a custom shop, you may also be able to fit your bass with other pickups of your choice, or find earlier models with ones installed.
