for me its the eternal battle..
I've started on french, and always loved how fine I can get my tone and articulation with it.. then years later I switched to German as it was real easy to warm it up and get decent tone right away.. I switched back to french about 8 months ago as I've been longing for the fine touch I used to have with it (not that you can't get that with German)... now I am leaning to German.. as french requires much more work to maintain and warm up etc... Now I play both equally well, and often switch from one to the other in my practice...
Thing is,, I do this alternate bass stance where I am practically behind the bass and the bass is almost vertical. I use my right leg against its side and that balances is so I don't have to employ the left hand to do it at all - this makes for one stable and comfortable way to play German bow, I can tell you.. however, since I picked up french again, I am having issues and keep getting back into traditional stance - it just gives my bow arm more power and stamina... ahh.. don't know what to do in the end.. I really need to settle for one or the other,, can't be the master of both. just don't have that much time on my hands.
