What is emo?

Now all emo isn't bad. Some bands can do it, and do it good. I hardly think of Jimmy Eat World as an emo band. A pop-punk or rock, definitly, but not emo.
I guess I fall into the "I like modern emo" scene, quite a few of the bands I like are listed in this thread as being horrible, but thats one persons opinion.
Personally I think that although you may not like one type of music, it doesn't mean its horrible or an abomination to music in general. Anyone that starts insulting/stereotyping and entire genre of music is just being a musical snob IMO.
I'll go back to writing that song about the girl that dumped me that doesn't exist now.

Technically Jimmy Eat World are more of a real emo band than what you consider emo. What you like is technically wat you call the pop punk crap. J.E.W. for short has been around longer and established that genre amongst others before the whiners came around.

The Used....which deserve to die horrible deaths for the mutilation they have caused to ear drums and to the minds of dyed-black, eye-length hair, baby-clothes (but with more anarchy! Woo!) teenagers

I acually like The Used. I think Jeph Howard is one of the better rock bassists in mainstream music today. Check out their new album he's really gotten better.

I don't want to start anything mean, but I just wanted to stand up for one of my favorite modern "rock" bassists :D

Bad Brains scream , are they emo??? I like emo if Bad Brains are emo.

Thus I have formulated these postulates.

Bad Brains = Screamed Punk/Reggae
Screaming = Emo
Bad Brains - Blackness + Heavier, Less Groovey Drummer - Daryl Jennifer's Awesomeness + Rex Brown's sucktitude = Pantera
Pantera = Emo

Kind of like six degrees a seperation. This gives me an idea for a thread...

Do you really need to ask that?

By the way, thanks for the An Albatross suggestion, I dig all ten minutes of it immesensely.

Glad to hear it! Eat Lightning **** Thunder is also good, as is their split with xBxRx. I'm happy to report that, last time I saw them, they'd written new songs and had expanded their set to almost 50 minutes! (They played about 21 songs, with some jams thrown in). Their newer songs are longer as well, so their next album might pass the 20 minute mark.

You can get their stuff cheap from here
