What is Growl

To me trying to describe "growl" with words is like trying to describe the colour "blue" to someone who has been blind from birth......after you've had 18 beers and 3 root canals and several Vicodins. Examples of recorded performances are the way to go, and even then it gets tough. Growl means many different things to many different people. Hold on tight.

"Onamatopeic"... Now that's an English word for 'ya! You Brits always like to show off the Mother Tongue to us Colonists... heh... heh...!

So that be growl?!? Well, I can usually get my Marshall VBA400 to make that sound very easily... and very loudly, I might add.

BTW... that was a great clip!

Aloha...

I’ve always considered growl to be more of a “motor”-ish sound. I mean, growl, it’s a real word that was used because the bass sounds like it’s growling. Like an animal. GRRR… Vibrato, ya know… growl. Makes the bass sound like it’s got a good set of pipes on it. Like a V-8.

I never assumed that the musical definition was that different than what I apply to wolves, bears, and house-cats.

[edit] Although, I should add, when I think of a good example of growl, I think of Chevelle for some reason. [/edit]

I was just at a little city orchestra concert the other day, where I had a mini-epiphany: They were playing a Suza march with a prominent tuba part, and I said to my wife "now THERE'S some killer growl! THAT'S what bassists are looking for - TUBA TONE!".

That'll work, too. I put Pete Farndon's (of the Pretenders) P-bass in that category.

In deed - in fact I'm suprised the Lizzy soundclip didn't generate a brawl.

Anway, I've started a Bass Tone Glossary in the pups forum and I'm looking from representative soundclips of tones - like Growl. It's at the top of the Pup forum. Paul has agreed to proivde server space on TB for anybody that has their own clips. In fact for the time being, it's limited to original stuff cause we're not sure about the legal aspects of copywrited material for clips loaded onto the server. I'm in the process of clearing up with him if there's any problem using the Lizzy clip and the like - since it's not loaded on the TB server it's not really sanctioned by TB and seems fair game to me. In fact if any of you guys are attorneys and know the legalities - we'd like to know.

Thanks to contributors in advance.
