What is Growl

A pickup placed in the "sweet" spot if the first thing needed to get a good natural growl

This is where the low mid is the most dominant. You can get a growl from an eq setting on the bass or the amp, but you will never find the real growly sound you dream about if there is no pickup in the sweet spot. My single H 6 strings bongo= super growl and you can not replicate that sound with a bongo with another PU config.

My 2c

It is, indeed, pure awesomeness. Absolutely love the tone. Don't get growl confused with overdrive, though. A bass that growls will growl without overdrive or speaker breakup.

Yeah your right, but real growl is IMO a kind of overdrive inside the bass itself (the vibrations of the bass and the way the strings rub on the fretboard). It is possible to boost that particular sound with some effects and/or EQ but the growl as to be there at the source (the bass) because it is impossible to boost something that isn't there.

Growl is natural overdrive/fuzz/distortion caused by pushing the amp, cranking the input gain, or using the "boost" knob on GK amps. It's when your bass sounds like a dog making a slight gutteral growl. Keep pushing and your growl will get called overdrive, barking, etc.

Well, what i know for sure is that my lovely bongo 6H growl even when i'm unplugged. I also tried a 'wick thumb nt and she was growling at me even unplugged.

I agree with Craig_S on "what is growl" but i can see that a lots of peoples have different opinions on that matter and we are all bass players here so i guess that every opinions are good and if you think you can make a growly sound in a different way than me and you like your sound, go for it, there is a good chance that i (and those who listen to you) would like your sound as-well, and this is what matter the most.

I may post some sound-clip later today (well after sleeping) of my bongo plugged without any effects and a flat eq. Maybe ill record it unplugged with a mic to show what i mean by "unplugged growl"

On this words, i think ill go to sleep, i drank around 10 cups of coffee today so i may had insomnia and come back in half an hour :hyper:

Good night fellow growler !!
