What is Growl

I agree with the "animal" thing ... a sort of low, deep GRRRRR.
My recipe is my Sadowsky played fingerstyle over the bridge pickup plugged into my brand new Thunderfunk 550 & Accugroove Tri112L ... Growl Heaven! :D :D :D
Listening tips:
1) Lounge Lizards - Live in Berlin 1991 : Oren Bloedow playing under Mickey Navazio's solo on "Big Hearth"... for me the best example ever of Groove-Growl & Taste.
2) Lounge Lizards - No Pain for Cakes : Erik Sanko on "Where were you" ... probably the spirit of a grizzly was trapped into Mr. Sanko bass!

I got some from the last album I made with my SR5. Just very short samples (a little weak on the treble side of the growl but still growly to me)...

FWIW:

yeh, those can't be accessed. Don't suppose you have them in a seperate file that can be shipped? Is this copywrited stuff and is just a bass clip?

As an aside since I think of it everytime I come to this thread.

Buddy of mine gave me a pair of Tickets to a Kiss concert wayback. Next to the old lady's (grandmothers who accompanied their grandkids - and there were masses of them) covering their ears, complaining of headaches, and jumping out of their seats EVERY time the cannons went off; the most distinct memory of that concert was Gene Simmons solo.

Standing in the midst of a swelling fog and hellfire lighting, whipping that tongue out and around, making that bass growl, roar, and wail sounding like T-Rex engaged in battle to the death. Hell of show stopper.

In a totally wierd way, that was one of the most fun concerts I've ever been to. And I was suprised, they had some decent tunes.

I was just at a little city orchestra concert the other day, where I had a mini-epiphany: They were playing a Suza march with a prominent tuba part, and I said to my wife "now THERE'S some killer growl! THAT'S what bassists are looking for - TUBA TONE!".

Joe

Oh yeah, I hear you. Also, at least for me, some baritone sax sounds are a tonal bass guitar goal.

I dont mean for this to be rude or provacative (though it will come across as juvenile). My wife once asked what I meant by a good growly bass tone. At the time I described it as a full, thick, but DRY beer fart when heard through the mild muffle of flannel lined jeans.

Some may say I am edging into a burpy tone there, and i wouldnt argue too long.

Nubie. Looked around couldn't find the answer.. What is GROWL?
I know its the sound lots of you guys want can you define it to me or a recording thats got it?

Hungry for Knowledge.

Spelling sucks :hmm:

Thanks

I you want to hear it, play some mid rangy stuff down by the bridge, especially on a jazz type setup. Check out almost any Jaco recording and you'll hear it. Same with most Zepplin and JPJ. The opposite would be any Paul McCartney in the early Beatles with that woody, Hofner sound. I don't think Hofners know how to growl.
