Reaper says I've been evaluating it for 2 years, running it 7 times for a total of 14 minutes. So, hasn't caught fire yet. Audacity has been my speed until now.

I see a keyboard as central (following Paul in my mind).
I see capturing musical ideas and getting them documented (as opposed to noodling on the instrument, noticing that something sounds good to me, then forgetting it).

I use software instruments to play music, and I record it directly into the DAW. I usually start with a piano track and craft a set of chords that I like, then maybe add a drum program, add a bass track, etc. Once I have the "bones" of a composition I can decide what else it needs ... give it live feel ... recording audio tracks ...
