what is nato body?

pretty much as the title says.. what is nato body, i have a ibanez (Invalid Link Removed) and i just wondered whats under the black colour

Nato is a wood that *some* people say shares some characteristics with mahogany though it is IME much lighter in color. The grain in the piece I have seen was not very distinctive. I have only seen the one sample that I know of but it seemed fairly meh to me.

I'm sure somebody here knows much more than I do - I'm probably just bored.....

Thanks for fast comments i just wondered if it was wood at all and not just some kind of plastic crap or something xD i had some thoughts about remove the black paint in the future

that's a good wood.
we call it nyatoh here (in indonesia).
anyway, only people with golden ears could hear the difference between different woods.
so, don't worry about it.

I can tell you first hand that an amazing sounding bass can be made out of nato. Just pick up a Brubaker Brute if you don't believe me.

Nato and Sapele (another Mahogany relative, but with a unique, striped grain pattern) could very well be something that will be more common in the years ahead, as the areas of the world that used to produce the lightest, most resonant Mahogany are beginning to dry up.
