What is the best P J combo pickups?

For 5 strings - P/J 5 Bass Pickups - Best Bridge J Pickup to use with a Fender American P Pickup?

Any experience here? Would a Fender American V J bridge be best? Any others?

Or any other PJ5 sets that are reasonably priced.

My American P pickup is 10.2 kOhm DC resistance.

I'm struggling here - any thoughts would be appreciated. There are lots of matched 4 string P/J pickup sets, not many 5 string sets. Nordstrand are good, but so dang expensive $$

Thanks. I have overwound Fralins in my J bass, love them.

I have a set of PJ5 Nordys in another bass; they are the best I've used. Especially for mixing the p and j pickup.

What I learned - I really do not mix the p and j pickup much at all. I play the gig w/ the p pickup, and solo with the j. And slapping a p bass works for me.

If you do not mix the pickups, you do not need a matched set. This opens up lots of possibilities.

For this project I ended up keeping the Fender American P V/5 pickup; I like the tone. I tried several j pickups and ended up going with a cheap blade/rail pickup from Guitar Madness GM on ebay. It had the hottest signal, plenty of squawk, and with the blade you don't have to worry about lining up pickup poles and strings.

PS - the rail pickups are not 'noiseless' as stated in the listing. They are noiseless if you are using a pair, but used separately they behave like a single coil pickup. You can dial the noise out w/the tone control.

I have several P-Js, and went through more than a few pickup sets until I found my flavor.

1) Fralin - 10% overwound J
2) Sadowsky - standard P-J set
3) Lollar - 10% overwound J (Note: this is on my BEAD strung bass)

The Sadowsky set is the only set I've heard that sound balanced to my ears without the benefit of the 10% overwind on the J - which thickens the sound just enough to balance sonically with the P pup. (IMHO, of course)

10% split J or regular J is the Fralin's? Thanks.

Dear All

In my efforts to make the most of a salvaged bass* I am looking for a thin P/J pickup set. Something around 1.5 cm / 0.59 inches would be nice to have.

I realize this is a unconventional request ^^I do not care id it's used or brand new. Any suggestion will be appreciated. Thank you !


* Long story : it's a Neck-thru fretless, probably a prototype from a local luthier, that I found abandonned sitting for years as a decoration, unstringed and at a friend's room, like twenty years ago or so. It had the neck like a bow, so i placed it during years on a flat wood then stringed it with high gauges to get it back, and now by chance... it plays nice^^. It has a very thin body which explains i am looking for the thinnest pickups i can to get a lower action.
