I'm not sure that I'd call a compressor an effect, as such. It's more a dynamic control, altho' you could push it to make an effect...

I was just thinking of things people put in their pedalboards when I was making the list (excluding tuners and a/b switches).

Looking though to keep brands and specific recommendations out of it though. Not asking to recommend a pedal, but an opinion on the most important tool in the toolbox, so to speak.

While distortion is very important, I chose delay. Delay is the root of Flange, Chorus, and reverb. Using my DD-20, I can coax all of these effects... using just delay.

It's probably my most used effect (other than distortion)

I agree -

Hey: I'm definately for correct terminology! But I also agree that Compressor definately needs to be a choice on a list of "most important".

We should use the term "processor" when we want to avoid this. That would make this poll "what is the most useful processor".

Oh!.. and the answer is: COMPRESSOR.

Joe

Another question is, "most useful" for WHAT? Nothing is useful without a specific purpose. A hammer is not useful when you want to wipe your butt, and toilet paper is not useful when you want to nail something down. I voted "compressor" just because I'm predictable that way.

Useful for YOU. Basically, what is the one effect you feel like you can't play bass without - absolutely essential for your sound...

Just for the sake of this thread, lets keep the discussion focused on the question at hand. Yes, our fingers & EQ sections have a very definite role in affecting our tone.

But, after looking at the choices of the poll, surely we can all surmize that this wasn't the point of the poll.

I have a couple of effect boxes, but rarely use any of them. Mostly because, I dont have them mounted on a board. But, there are some songs for my next project that I'll be needing my Bassballs, & compression might be a nice touch, & I still want to buy another English Muff'n...
