What is the 'old' TalkBass?

I have seen a number of references to the 'old' TalkBass recently... "missing the 'old' TalkBass..." "the 'old' TalkBass was better..." etc.

I joined TalkBass in 2019. And over the last 5 years I've noticed no significant changes in TB. I can only assume I am a part of the 'new' TalkBass; the one that isn't as good as its predecessor.

Can someone please explain to me how the 'old' and 'new' TalkBass differ? When did it change? And why it's not as good as it used to be?

It's just nostalgic nonsense and means different things to different people. Nostalgia is merely a critique of the present. Someone experience confirmation bias of something they don't like and harken back to a time when they didn't have that experience.

TB has always been the same. Trends in instruments and music have changed, as well as our media consumption patterns, but this place really isn't different from years ago.

Yeah, that makes sense. I know there are some venerated members who no longer post or are no longer with us. That probably plays into it as well.

Yeah, tread lightly, there was a time when moderation was rather looser than it is now, and the change over caused some regulars to leave. I was a member back then, but wasn't active on here, I was still mostly over on HCBF (which flamed out and self-destructed because they weren't willing / able to apply the kind of moderation changes that happened here). Note that publicly questioning moderation is ill advised and a rules violation, so be careful when "near that line".

Beats me. I joined in '05 and I'm still a n00b. :atoz:

My guess would be early on there was not nearly the number of members and it seemed a tighter knit community, probably 'cuz one would see and dialogue with the same peeps over and over.

I haven't really noticed all that much of a clampdown on moderation. It's always been tight regarding certain topics. And while I don't necessarily agree, do understand that to be here is a priviledge and there are parameters to being here. That is the reason I am not a "supporting member".
There are other musical sites available if one desires more open mebbe controversal, and sometimes intense, dialogue. Paul's site (thank you!!), Paul's rules. peace and love

Maybe there is a little spill over from people (like me) that left social media and now spend more of their time here. It is more PC than it used to be but then, that's why I left everything else.
Maybe it is the fact that the age span has increased by 20 years.
Generally though, I tend to agree with @JPosega on that nostalgia comment.
It's better here than a lot of other places. Also, we talk about Bass here so I don't know what anyone is upset about. Try talking to a co-worker about Roto77's being unfairly demonized or how corner porting and more robust baffles are the key to light/strong cabinets.

So as you can see by my join date, I am a big NOOB.

However having spent many hours looking at older threads I do for sure think the time before reddit, more advance social media like Facebook and Instagram which are starting to replace most forums sadly, TB back in the early 2000s had a much more diverse user base of ages, and backgrounds I would personally say some from small observations.

I don't wanna even get into the Reddit bass forum, not bad by any means but everyday it is the same old, what is a great bass for beginner, can my 40 watt rumble play a big giant stadium gig, and there is less conversation every person you talk to is a different person rarely see the same user and soo much wrong info being share... blah blah blah...

Also notice less mod enforcing of certain language like other users have mention, it is a very hard thing to balance respectfully but older forums on here have had some unsavory comments that def rub me the wrong way... but ah they are old, also very much agree with Nostalgia, you feel it in anything in left, some feel for it for college, high school, first job, any time period blah blah. Sometimes it is a sad feeling or a good feeling and I am guessing it is generally a sadder feeling of the "good ol days"

But ah what I know I'm pretty new just my observations of being active user on other forums.
