What is the 'old' TalkBass?

If you're currently an Annual Gold Supporting Member, it won't show up on your page as an upgrade option. I am an Annual Supporting Member and the Annual Supporting option does not show up on my page.

We cannot upgrade to the level, at which, we're currently participating.

I noticed it last year when I tried to renew, I always did it in advance so I didn't forget. Again, maybe a mod can explain..its not a big deal or anything, just curious.

I've seen many forums change their entire nature over their lifespan due to many factors (owner deciding a racing game and car culture forum should be strictly about actual racing resulting in a forum valued at almost a million dollars becoming deserted within a few months, a hack resulting in the total loss of what came before and destroying any motivation by the members to rebuild it, new owner's decisions resulting in pop up ads/giant banner ads/video ads on every...single...page, gradual loss of interest/people moved on--usually when a forum has too narrow a focus), but Talkbass is one of the few that remains mostly unchanged since before I signed up.

Every forum has the old crew who signed up in the beginning or shortly after, who get whittled away by changing interests/life/getting banned. Eventually they're gone and what you have left are regular users who use the forum as intended and the people who remember the old crew, who go on about how great things used to be back in the day while ignoring how the forum generally becomes more refined and better organized over time, with generally more professional moderation (as opposed to "I would ban you, but since we're buddies and you're the 14th person to register I'll crack a joke and ignore it").

Talkbass is fine, from what I've seen. Popularity of the forum will ebb and flow, users will come and go, but hey, at least it's not reddit.

I have seen a number of references to the 'old' TalkBass recently... "missing the 'old' TalkBass..." "the 'old' TalkBass was better..." etc.

I joined TalkBass in 2019. And over the last 5 years I've noticed no significant changes in TB. I can only assume I am a part of the 'new' TalkBass; the one that isn't as good as its predecessor.

Can someone please explain to me how the 'old' and 'new' TalkBass differ? When did it change? And why it's not as good as it used to be?

I've been here for a quite a while and I honestly couldn't tell you a tangible difference other than "the world, and forum etiquette in general, have changed since 2005."

There's this too - there was really only one other forum I was ever particularly active on, and it had been a very close-knit group from like, 1998 to 2017 (I joined in 2006, I think). I apologize if this steps on any toes re the no politics rule, mods are free to delete if it does, but around 2017-2018 the site owner got really into fringe far-right conspiracy theories like QAnon, Pizzagate, etc., as did a couple of other regular posters.

Mods did their best to enforce the very strict "no politics" rules (most forums have these!) to the point where a few regular posters got banned for harassing/threatening other regulars, accusing them of pretty heinous stuff in line with those conspiracy theories. I'm talking like, disagreements about marginal tax rates would rapidly turn into accusations of felony crimes and devil worship. Stuff that gets you banned from most forums.

However, the site owner then stepped in and said that those people couldn't be banned, and that to ban people for promoting QAnon/Pizzagate/etc was "censorship." So the mods quit in protest and nobody else stepped up, so what had been a very useful and interesting car forum for almost two decades basically turned into 4chan overnight.

No it's still there. There is a yearly one as well as a one time fee.

Due to a software restriction, you cannot purchase a membership type that you already have, thus you can’t see the yearly gold option. Once yours expires, you will be able to view and purchase that option again, if you so choose.
