Has anyone A/B tested the Yamaha BB434 (or 734) against the Fender Deluxe Special? I think I have my own P/J search narrowed down to those two, but curious about QC and little details like tuner and bridge quality.

What is the ultimate best P/J value???

This. I bought my Shifter Classic 4 for $795 new just a few years ago. Even with the increase in price they're far better than any other PJ I've seen in the price range, with much better quality control (not to mention North American made).
If you are considering a P/J, in your shoes I would take a serious look at one of these, a Cort GB74 Gig, with a hybrid J/humbucker in the bridge position:

I recently acquired this Mike Lull P/J4 Special. It was priced really low and I think it’s a great value. Really great instrument with Fralin P pickups and a Nord dual coil. It’s passive, lightweight and controls are V/Blend/Tone. 1.75 at nut. It sounds great and the paint job is awesome. The dual coil really shines on this bass..

That has to be one of the most fundamentally flawed and off the wall reasons I’ve ever heard for wanting a musical instrument.
Better for you to step back and practice your thinking before buying anything.
Then come back and get something cheap.

The Sgt. nailed it. I'm not the biggest Fender fanboy, but this one ticks all the boxes. MIM to keep the $$ lighter. Good hardware. PJ with 3-band EQ and 18v box, and a bypass switch. Rounded heel. To, me one of the best value for money axes in the Fender catalog. And everything already pre-routed for any combination of new pickups or tone network should you ever decide to change out anything.
On the other hand, the various Ibanez and Yamahas in that layout and that price range are terrific as well.
And a couple from the most overlooked bass brand out there, ESP:

A very good value is a P and a J, both with upgraded aftermarket bridges, of course. So a P in white with a diamond plate pickguard and a J in fiesta red with tort. You'll be set.

It's a sport screwing with this guy, and him screwing back. He's all about it too, and it's in dry fun. He isn't actually stupid, and he isn't actually an A-hole. He's OK, actually. He posts dooshy, bro-ey stuff on purpose. He gets snark in return. So the cycle goes.
