    This is kind of a dumb question but what the iron thing above the bass guitar strings?

    Yeah if you mean on the headstock, that'd be the string tree (may be more than one).

    Good grief, how can we see anything in that really bizarre photo and can you be more specific? =)
    Another "What ... is this ..." topic that is weird like your other one What shape is this bass guitar. where you wrote: "I don’t think it’s an actual shape".

    There are no dumb questions. That is a hydraulic enamelizer for the fetzer valve. It looks to me like it needs some 30 weight ball bearings.

    But yes, if the OP can prepare that Fetzer with some 3-in-1 oil and some gauze pads they'll be ready to rock.

    Ok, I’ll play...
    The thing that might be above the bass guitar strings are the headphones on the bassist. - They are an accessory, and they are also above the bass guitar strings. What do I win?
