Double Bass What is your favorite cab for your upright

I have not used it that much yet but my guess is that like playing on any empty hollow built stage it may couple some the bass sound some, but it really throws the sound such that I am going to guess it will not be a problem. Plus getting the 5"s off the sub cab I think will help with the total amount of low freq on the floor per se. As I play in more awkward settings (which I have coming up) I will let you know.

Sorry for the error. You're right, its a 6 in. I should know better. I just need to step away from the bong. I agree. The 6in mid really helps with the articulation of the bass without sounding like a horn. Its actually quite natural sounding. Equally good for electric bass. Punchy but still big sounding. The Baer ML112's are killer boxes. imho

I looked through this entire thread and saw no mention of any 2x10 cabs. Do you jazz guys not like them? I've got an EA NL 210 and love it! I also have an Ampeg micro 210 cab that I use for smaller gigs. That one doesn't sound as good but is much smaller and lighter for little gigs and radio shows.

I am very happy to use my NL210 but side by side I prefer the VL208. I prefer to turn the tweeter off when I use the NL210.

Only venturing a guess but for the guys that do lots of gigs without an amp and only bring an amp occasionally its a pretty big cab for that. Certainly if I was I that position a wizzy 10, acoustic image or Phil jones combo would be easier to drag around.

Well today fellow bassist Ben Rolston and I put a bunch of gear to the taste test with some interesting results.

Troll Mic+Headway EDB-2+Realist=Ooo-La-La!

heads: Genz Benz Shuttle 9.2, EA Doubler, Behringer 550 watt powered 12"speaker
cabs:Genz Benz Shuttle 2 12" cab, EA Wizzy 10", Big E M45

1st place=Genz Benz Shuttle 2 12" cab ....most open sounding
2nd place=Behringer 550 watt speaker ....suggest pole mounting to avoid bass rumble
3rd place= EA Wizzy 10 ... amazing tone and we think the 12" may be better than all of these options
4th place= Big E M45 ..... punchy mids

These cabs were ranked in order of most natural sounding but the real key was the Troll and EDB-2.
We played with the instrument setting and agreed that Violin provided the best hi pass control and allowed for bass roll off.
The Troll in conjunction with the pre was amazing (we plugged directly into the powered speaker and had very negative results)
We tried the amps with no EDB-2, going thru effects loops vs into the amp pre and the sound was consistently better regardless of signal chain.
I know this started as a cab thread but you should check out the Troll Mic and Headway.
There is a bass whisperer video on youtube that demos the Acoustic Image Flex system with the Troll Mic and the Headway allows you to blend both but the Flex has more eq flexibility.

Just some suggestions, the violin setting on the EDB-2 "cuts bass and low midrange frequencies, below 200 Hz" I'd
reccomend experimenting with the guitar setting if it's to boomy, or using the Headway's bass and low mid EQ. That's a pretty
extreme cut for Double Bass. The Flex is a great product, I'm looking into it myself, just know that it's twice the cost of the EDB-2
and rightfully so, because it has two independent, pre amps.

When I got first Headway EDB-1 I thought I'd want a two channel pre, but after using the box for nearly
three years, I've not found it to be an issue. For me, the Headway is an economy of scale, and has
the option being battery powered, which eliminates having to carry around a wall wart, if you chose. Just
my take.

I use the Edb1 and even before you touch any of its myriad knobs and switches, just the velvet presence it adds to virtually all the pickups I plug into it beats all the other preamps I have tried.In fact at least on my bass, the combination of the Edb1 and the MAS 46 dwarf the difference in the various pickups I've run thru. In other words, the pick ups seem to matter less then the preamp and cab although some pickups still sound better then others. It seems like the MAS gear has a short half life before the next great MAS thing replaces it, but While the 46 is big for me, (coming from Wizzy 10) it consistently, daily, room after room, plays out an inspiring musical representation of the bass sounds I want to hear. In fact I gladly deal with the schlep aspect in order to have that much satisfaction in the sound on the gig.

Your experience with Mike's 46 is what I'd have expected. I've heard his 45 and his 46 side-by-side with my Thunderchild 112, which some people have found to be a decent upright cab. Imo the 45 is a better-sounding cab than mine for upright, and the 46 is an overall better-sounding cab (though I'd rank the 45 ahead of it if we're talking about upright only).

Speaking of MAS 45, did anyone experience any buzzing on certain frequencies? I got my MAS 45 today (used) and around Bb on the upright and a larger array on the electric there's a very subtile buzz coming from the cab. I'll try it in various places this weekend to make sure is not some room interference.
Other than that it sounds great and I am happy with the purchase, ... but the buzz is there... Any thoughts?

Tried the Wizzy 12" but much preferred the Wizzy 10".
The 12" sounded muffled compared to the 10" with my setup.
I recently played an outdoor wedding reception with the Troll,Realist, Genz Benz combo and it was great.
This setup sounds good at low-medium volume though high volume may be tricky.

I got to demo both boxes, and ended up getting the EDB-2, since it like to use my DPA 4099B blended with the Ehrlund Pickup and Pre Amp. The design improvements to the EDB-2 have made the unit very impressive. Especially the Standby setting for the power switch, the assign switches for the Notch Filter and EQ, and the phantom assign switch.

section. You can use it to double with an active BG by assigning the EQ to the DB input and using the internal pre amp on your BG. The EDB-2 boosts the gain on the Bass Guitar, without EQ. Just my take.

After all of the experimenting with speakers, amps ,preamps,powered monitors,microphones, mixing boards and the like , here is what makes the most sense, least hassle,most direct signal chain and hopefully most reliable set up.

Acoustic Image Ten2 S4 plus

The Acoustic Image Ten2 S4 plus is compact, has every feature known to mankind, independent EQ, great sound.
While the Headway EDB-2 was great for the Realist, there was no independent EQ for the Troll and required another power source.
While mixing board and powered monitor was good ,too many cables,connections and power sources.
I considered the Flex Preamp to use with the Genz Benz but then again more cords ,connections and signal chain devices and the Ten2 cab sounded tighter and more focused
