Should never have any guilt at all building something for yourself. As long as you aren't selling them to anyone, go nuts, you aren't infringing on anyone's IP or breaking any law. This really is the best way to go for most of the basic stuff: buffers, loop switchers, fuzz pedals, that sort of thing. You can build with a better quality enclosure, jacks, switches, etc to get a more robust pedal in the end, and usually wind up paying around the same amount as an "original". Except now you can back a truck over it and it will keep on working. And you built it so if it fails in some way, you know how to fix it instead of tossing it.

What is your guilt leval for owning a clone?

It depends. If its a clone of something that you can no longer buy, or as other have pointed out, a clone with enhancements (which really isn't a clone) then zero guilt. If it's something where you can buy the original, but you're just too cheap, I don't support that. I also have no problem with people building their own; I wish I could.
I love BYOC. I also really like to build basses from Warmoth/USACG parts, based on fenders.. I would consider them clones. I have 3 of them and they all play better than any fender I've played.. they are also built mostly to my specs with Nordstrand electronics (the best, in my opinion).
So.. guilt level? none.
Now, if I were sneaking around boutique shops and stealing schematics and such to build from.. I would have a lot more guilt.

I have two clones.
They look like Fender Jaguars, but they say "Squier" on the Front of the headstock (though they do say "Fender" on the Back of the headstock).
The only thing that stops me from ... going through with "it", is... who would then look after my black beauties? Who would play them? Who would intonate the bridges and give a new battery to the HB? Who would de-crackle the pots on the VM? Who would caress their necks, feed them new strings from time-to-time?
Clones need love, too!

What if you're too cheap to buy the original, so you build your own using the same design? I'm not seeing the difference between building and buying...or did I misunderstand yer post?

nearly every fine violin, viola, cello, and double bass are copies of the work from an old master.

There are many examples of "cloned" products that are of better quality and function than the original.

There are numerous companies who make a better "Fender" than Fender does.
Many Pro-players pay thousands more than the price of a Fender to get a better "Fender".

If it's a pedal in production currently, I will not buy a clone. Make one myself though? Sure. I don't like stepping on other people's toes.
My one direct clone is a version of the Ibanez Flying Pan phaser/panner. At the time, they were not available new, and the originals were forbiddingly pricey and hard to even find.
Even now, the new reissued ones are frikkin' expensive, so I'm going to take my sweet time on getting one. And I'm pretty sure they only reissued them because they were getting cloned due to the lack of availability of, yet high demand for, the originals.

When I pay for art, I want the money to go the artist who created the art. Clones are not art... klones are not art etc..
