What is YOUR sound?

What is YOUR sound?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't have ONE sound ...

1 - I like to get a loud and trebly Entwistle tone.
2 - I like to get a Smooth McCatrney
3 - I like to get a aggressive Chris Squire pick tone.
4 - I like to get a dirty Geddy tone.
5 - I like to get a overdriven John Wetton tone.
6 - I like to get a Greg Lake pick tone.
7 - I like to get a Jack Bruce dark blues tone.

And sometimes I need a different tone for a song.

I play a few different set-ups... either a P with flats, or a shortscale (JJ) with rounds. Always with fingers. Always with older solidstate heads (a 60's Kustom200 or 80's GK 400rb), and 10"s (4x10 or 6x10).

I feel like i have a personal style more-so than a specific sound.

I have 3.5 rigs (need a 410HLF to be complete)...but im really digging this lately! (cabs are 2x10 + 2x12)

Rather than make a feeble attempt to describe my sound, here are a couple of links. One in the studio, one live. Same bass (2004 Stambaugh ODB 5), same pair of hands. Everything else is different. The two links sound remarkably similar. I guess this is my sound. Weird, huh? :)

So based off your pics, your sound is something identical to Justin Chancellor's from Tool?

I always wanted a Wal just to even try to get his sound, but it's way too expensive for me to afford, so I saved up for a "knock off" Stingray since I know that bass kinda gets a similar tone but is lacking in the mids (still sounds great with a Sansamp Bass Driver though)

I have been in a Tool Tribute...but these days i play everything but Tool...with little or no effects.
Once the new album gets ready to release im sure i will be getting a call from the guys to start back up! I have also done some orig stuff. As far as what the OP is asking, my sound is always changing/evolving :hmm:

Hmmm, currently, it's a blend of P pu full on, with the J pu about 60%-80%, backed off the tone knob a little, through 12" speakers with plenty of snap from Blue Steel strings.
a little overdrive, but not much.

But that's just live.

recent recording was all P pu, no J, tone about 50%, through a Sunn Model T, through 12" speakers, blended with a DI for low end.

It has to start with the equipment (bass guitar, amp, strings, pick/no pick), then the equipment's settings, then the players feel/touch/attach, right? Simple to test. Give several bass players the exact same equipment, have them play the same bass line and see what happens. I suspect that the players feel/touch/attach is more important in the whole picture.

Very true, however some like to say tone is ALL in the fingers and that is not true. It's easy to tell the difference between John Entwistle playing a P-bass versus his Alembic. Marcus Miller would still be awesome on a P-bass, but he wouldn't get his signature tone. Etc.

Yes, it can be hard to tell the difference between Geddy playing a J-bass or a Ric, but c'mon, he used tons of signal processing.
