What is YOUR sound?

Passive Jazz with Roto66 into GK 700rbII. I used to always incorporate some sort of overdrive at all times, but I'm getting away from that because I'm lazy.

Although, for one band I'm in, overdriven bass is a signature of the band, so the OD stays. And instead of a Jazz, its a Precision. And ideally an SVT rig.

So, I guess those are my sounds.

I play a 01 MIM Fender jazz. With this bass I use a Tech 21 Sansamp Programmable BDDI, volume pedal, and tuner pedal. I tend to plug into the PA but if there is an amp available I'll use that, change the settings all to 12 so it's neutral and control my EQ from my BDDI.

My sound for this rig is heavily influenced by Geddy Lee. A distinctive growl, but nothing like heavy metal or whatever. All pots on full; bridge pup higher than neck pup. I love the tone on a jazz bass when both pups are on max volume.

I also play a 01 MIA Precision. With this I just plug into a Line 6 Lowdown LD150 amp and control the EQ on that amp. It's not that big, but let's face it; it's not like I play in huge concert halls or anything.

Depends on what I'm covering at the time, but I tend to like alot of low end, with enough mids that I can hear the notes I'm playing, as well as feel them - but not enough mids to blat or blare - and enough highs to do the same, without sounding too trebly... I can get "my sound" with Fender Jazz's in series, P Basses, a Gibson T-Bird, EBMM 5ers, or an Ibby sr905, thru Mesa or Genz-Benz amps, into Mesa cabs - although I've also done well with G-K amps and certain cabs by SWR or Ampeg...

I don't use effects, and make sure my basses all sound good thru a DI on their own - but like to use a tubey sounding DI for added warmth... I also change my sound depending on if I'm playing in a 1 guitar band or a 2 guitar band... I use rounds, and play mostly with a pick - but use fingers when I can cop the desired sound that way...

- georgestrings

A Warwick Thumb or possibly a Rickenbacker 4001/4003 stung with TI JF344's, played through a vintage tube amp, with a heavy pick. Bass on full, plenty of mids but still keeping that treble clarity. Maybe with some overdrive, distortion, and wah to top it off.
Or maybe using John Entwistle's finger style technique, If I'm feeling REALLY aggressive.

Oh, well that's cool man. I wish I could just convince my buddies to form a Tool tribute band, but there's no way it would ever happen because we typically don't do many covers unless it's live or something. But I think it's cool that even though JC was an influence you still want to search for your own sound, kudos man. BTW here's some pics of my bass. It's not quite up to snuff compared to your rig but hey, we're both into Tool so I figured why not...

Those other guitars aren't mine, they're my roommates. These photos were taken with my smartphone camera so the resolution is alittle pedestrian... sorry for that too :hiding:

your pics did not come through :hmm:

I don't have one sound.

1- Passive P-Bass or Jazz Bass into Tube Amp, 15" speakers with low overdrive pedal.

2-Modern active Jazz tone. SS Amp. 4x10 cab.

3-Hollowbody Fritz Brothers Bass, Tube Amp, with reverb & pick.

Spector + GK + Wonderlove or..
Spector + MM HD130 + Wonderlove or..
Precision + GK + Compressore or...
Spector + B:Assmaster

Or anything really. I have a sound in my head I want to get out, but it involves a pan and apparently that makes people seasick. I don't think I have 'my' sound. I just have sounds.

Mostly finger style unless I'm tired or lazy, then a pick. Not much of a slap player. Last time I slapped my bass she threw her drink at me.

My choice of sound depends on the song, but is still based on two concepts. These are to MY TASTE, yours may differ.
Modern sound: Round wound strings, maple board 5 string bass, hi-fi full range pickup, distortion pedal, D.I., solid state preamp, class D power amp, 3-way full range speaker.
Vintage sound: Flat wound strings, rosewood board 4 stringer, vintage voiced pickup, fuzz pedal, D.I., valve preamp, class D power amp, vintage voiced 4x10 non-tweeter speaker.
