What is YOUR sound?

I play Ibanez destroyers with a pick, either P or P/J passive DiMarzio pickups into a tri amped rig that lets me dial in my lows. mids, and highs separately. I use a couple of pedals to split the signal. Without any effects I have four main sounds depending on my tone setting and where I'm playing on my bass. I play back by the bridge for my "Bells of Mordor" sound and up by the fretboard for my "Red Tentacle" sound.

I'm looking forward to adding in some pedals, I have a Rat King on order so that will be first.

Cheers!

It changes a lot... sometimes song to song, but generally speaking, I like the tone of an active bass with the bass and mids lightly boosted, and the treble slightly cut. Both pickups on, fingerstyle over the neck pickup. Low mids boosted on my amp.

Long story short, nice and thick & fat, but not muddy. Also, clear, but not clanky, unless the song needs it. Warm. Kinda like audible molasses.

I don't have ONE sound ...

1 - I like to get a loud and trebly Entwistle tone.
2 - I like to get a Smooth McCatrney
3 - I like to get a aggressive Chris Squire pick tone.
4 - I like to get a dirty Geddy tone.
5 - I like to get a overdriven John Wetton tone.
6 - I like to get a Greg Lake pick tone.
7 - I like to get a Jack Bruce dark blues tone.

And sometimes I need a different tone for a song.

I agree 100% this is me and a good jazz can do it all, but also a good duck dunn tone

but none of those are yours, you're just emulating other players.

What is my sound? A rather mediocre one, I would say. :) Frankly, as long as it's not noticeably bad I don't worry overly much, I still have a lot to work on in terms of playing the right thing at the right time, which is more important than fine tuning the sound.

Technically though, and being a support kind of player rather than an in your face kind of bass player, my sound is usually old-ish nickel roundwounds, two jazz pickups mostly evenly balanced through a J-Retro preamp, with a somewhat flat or scooped sound. A kind of middle-of-the-road, doesn't-stand-out-too-much but you'll-miss-it-if-it's-not-there sound. :p
