What is your sound?

I am curious to know those that have a set sound for their bands, recordings, whatever have you.

What is it? What's involved?

Whilst I try to recreate different sounds in recordings just for fun.

I do have a go to for Open Mics, Jams and fill-ins.

Fender/Styled Jazz or Precision (Favouring the Neck Pickup if a Jazz)
La Bella Gold White Tapewounds
Soft Foam Mute
Heavy on the Mids and slight Bass boost.
Slight Compression if not using a tube amp

Aria SB-1000 in D standard with DR DDT strings through an EBS compressor & Sansamp BDDI V1 into FRFR speakers. Aggressive fingerstyle… chickenhead switch on position 3 with bass, treble, & presence boosted.

I just want the notes I'm playing to be heard, so I mostly don't futz with knobs and switches.

For recording an upright I like a large diaphragm condenser about 18 inches from the treble side f-hole.

For recording electric, I go DI to the interface, pickup(s) dimed, tone dimed (passive) or at center detents(active) and let whoever mixes add whatever comp or EQ is needed.

I rarely play live anymore, but when I do I just try to get the cleanest, most even sound I can get in a given situation.

I'm not sure how to describe my sound, but whatever instrument I play, I sound like me (for better or worse).

Disclaimer: the Rumble 100 is the house amp at a casual I gig at at least 3x per month.
Basses may vary but this rescued battle axe with a passive EMG and Labella flats gets out quite a bit.

Mostly: a passive, 60's style Jazz Bass (either 4 or 5 string) with .045-.105 nickel wound roundwounds with both pickups and the tone at 100% through a subtle compressor (currently I use a Cali76) through a pretty clean amp with a bit of boost of the low end and low mids through 12" speakers. Loosely based on Paul Turner's and Meshell Ndegeocello's Jazz bass sound. When I'm playing with in-ear monitoring and don't need a "real" amp, I try to emulate that sound with my Helix LT.

So basically this setup defines my ideal sound:

Precision with rounds, usually Hi Beams. If I use nickels, it will be Pure Blues or SBNs.

Two different signal chains depending on need.

1. ToneHammer 500 into a Bergantino 2x12.
2. TU-3 > EBS MultiComp > OE DCX > BDDI v2

We mostly play on silent stages so I use the pedalboard the most.
