What keeps you humble ?

musically, the fact that my whole life, i have been able to work for my heroes who are in my opinion the cream of the crop. yes i am a bass player. no i am not rick price. that sort of thing. i'm good at what i do but not like them. i dont mind being a tech for someone for that reason. no ego here

in real life, i dunno. no need to brag about stuff and get full of your self.

Everything I do, I do in competition with myself; striving to be better than what I was before. Actual competition with other people doesn't interest me in the least (the winning part). Its really what led me to art and music.

See the reason I have bring up this side of humility is because I have a problem with low-selfesteem. Its the (sorry self professed low self esteemers) worst character a person can hold. Mainly because it brings down a persons confidence and leads to people being taken advantage of, and not accomplishing what a person may be capable of.

I know this, I had horrible self esteem. And while I was able to raise social ranks through humor and self-depreciation; I came this does not equal respect or the portrayal of confidence. Which doesn't win the girl.

Confidence is key. The uber character. The humble yet confident person is a force like no other. Its the person who gets the job, gets the girl, lives life the way they want to.

I figure, I'll only live this life once. I'd like to live knowing I have the ability to whatever I want. Is it humble? Maybe. I understand there's many steps in doing the things I want to do. I didn't pick up a bass 6 years ago thinking, "well I'm already the best at this". Practice, practice. But practicing with the thought in mind that someday I can be really good at this instrument (not that I am yet, but I will be).

So I suppose if being humble can fit into thinking that the "self" is capable of anything, then sure I might be humble.

==============================================

Another food for thought, to all the people that answered "Yes" to being humble; isn't that already proving that you aren't humble.

Wouldn't the humble person say, "I couldn't tell you, I'm not sure".

JESUS CHRIST.

Listening to and/or watching any of the following: Stanley Clarke, Anthony Jackson, Alphonso Johnson, Bunny Brunel, James Jamerson, Jaco Pastorius, Marcus Miller, Louis Johnson, Larry Graham, Jimmy Johnson, Jeff Berlin, John Patitucci, Matthew Garrison, Adam Nitti, Darrell Freeman, Mauruce Fitzgerald, Fred Hammond, Andrew Gouche, etc. In other words, any musician who sends me back to the woodshed.

Definately not humble here... I try to act more thoughtfully towards others than most, but I believe myself to be above the average person on many levels.

I believe that only through a high self-worth can one truely show respect to others. There's a difference between "I'll never be able to slap that fast- I'm just not good enough" and "Wow, he's spent a lot of time practicing. Not my style, but he does an awesome job of it."

I'm with ya man.

I've had self-loathing problems since I was a kid, so even though I have a slightly more realistic perception of my capabilities as an adult, it's still instinct for me to assume that I am not good enough. Even today I have great difficulty accepting compliments, and I react negatively to people showing kindness (I've been trying to convince my family to not buy me birthday gifts for years.) So I'm not sure if that means I'm humble or just ****ed in the head.
