Mostly jumping between fretted 6 and 4. Used to play a 5-string but ever since acquiring a 6-string, the 5 has just been sitting in it's case.

Since I only play at home, weight is not that much of an issue so I usually grab my Ibanez BTB806MS. The only annoying thing about it is playing around the low C seated. The 37" requires too much of a stretch in the position I sit with my bass. When I stand, it's fine.

I mostly use my 4-string for alternate tunings. It's got D'Addarios balanced 120s on it, so I usually keep it around D standard give or take. It can also do E standard without having to mess with the action but at that point it's just easier to play around the 5th fret position on my 6-string.

Only 5s! Never 4s! Never 6s!

It goes far deeper than what type, imv.
I use Jazz 5's...there is enough variation in all those that I have to want to take more than two out.
So, we compromise depending on what the track needs..and you find that out on playback videos or audios of the gig.

I have a great playing Xotic Jazz...but in my current gigs, it's just not 'right'
The low mid voice is nice on its own..but just obviously wrong in track.

So then you burn through the basses you'd like to take out and then learn what you have to take out.
One or two BL's will actually say 'not that' and you bristle, but when you get it, you get it. ime.

I own 4,5,6,7, and 12 string basses, including a fretless 4 & 5.

I play them all, but these days, I find myself playing 5 stringers about 90% of the time.

I make it a point to play all of my basses out at least once a year, but when I play one of my fours, I really miss that low B string.

Back when I played in an oldies band, it was easier to do. I would always bring a 5 or 6, and one of my four bangers as a backup, to be used on one set or a few songs.

Now that I'm only playing at church a couple of times a week, it's a little bit of a challenge.
