I play in a wedding/club band & for that gig I use D'Addario Pro Steels. I need a bright sound for that band & they seem the last the longest & hold up the best. I also do a blues gig & for that I use D'Addario Half Rounds or LaBella Flats. The LaBella Flats are the best flat wounds I've tried but they're pricey. For the money the D'Addario Chromes are a best buy for flats.

What kind of strings do you use?

My strings of choice on all my 4 string P basses are D'Addario Pro Steel DAD_EPS165-5. My guy here in Phoenix used to work for Michael Schenker for 9 years as his guitar tech and he does the work on ALL my 4 string P basses. He takes the G string off the 5 string set and tosses it. He uses the B as my Low E string. He adjusts the nut at the top so the B fits comfortably. Thunder tone!!!! In 29 yrs of playing I never thought of doing it that way, but OH MY GOD the tone is intense. I run all my basses through Hartke LH1000 with a single Hydrive 410 and a single Hydrive 115. The tone is insane. If you're ever in Phoenix, look up B & D guitars. He is the BEST in AZ.!!!!
Also my fellow bottom enders.... DON'T PAY outrageous prices on bass strings check out juststrings.com. They're at least 2-3 dollars cheaper than GC or Sam Ash or Musicians Friend etc. Great Choices as well.

I'll stick to my Elixir Nanowebs .45's to .130 steels. Or the ocasional Spector strings on my Spector Euro bass.
I keep a set of GHS Precision Flats on one P-bass for some thump, and a set of Rotosound RS66LD on another for some zap.
I keep a set of Ernie Ball Hybrid Slinkys on my fretted J-bass for some zing, and a set of D'Addario nylon tapewounds on my fretless J-bass for some mwah.
And finally, I keep a set of DR Sunbeams on my ESP B-154DX for some funk.
These combinations are solid. All my other equipment is an experiment in progress.

all .045 to .105. squier standard jazz bass with rotosound 77s, blacktop jazz with original roundwound fenders, and most recently curt mangan nickel plated steel roundwounds on deluxe active jazz bass at our church, I think I like the sound of them the best.
Just switched my Spector Legend to Elixer Nanoweb Stainless Steels. Absolutely glorious. Amazing Elixer high-end, and full bodied SS sound to boot.
I did TI Jazz Flats for a long time, but I fell in love with the DR Jonas Hellborg set. The talk about more fundamental is no joke and I love the feel. The only thing that sucks is that the E string is too fat for the stock tuner on my MIM P mass. I had to crimp the end of the string a bit with pliers to force fit it, but it works. An upgrade to Hipshots should alleviate that problem, though.

Sounds like your amp shorted out.
I put on my first pair of GHS bass boomers 95-40 after sticking with DR's for several years. I think I like these a bit more actually, the depth of the tone is good. I read reviews saying these go out quickly, but I haven't experienced any problems. I don't know if that's because I only use my fingers or what... but yeah. I'm glad with these.

They are the first set of flatwounds that I have tried, but I defiantly will stay with the flats regardless the brand.
