What makes a person eccentric?

Making little figures out of your boogers and selling them to unsuspecting folks,well,ok, that might be a little more than eccentric, perhaps bordering on something else,ok,ummmm gotta go.

Exactly...the previously quoted definition paints eccentricity as a borderline negative, and I see it completely differently. It's not a dangerous thing, you're not hurting anyone, and being true to yourself first. One would think that'd be commendable...but nope. Branded..in an attempt for comformists to feel better about their compromises.

Yeah, the word "strange" in the textbook definition does sound a bit negative, but I dont view eccentricity as a negative value at all. There is something to be said for those who walk a path against the grain. Or, perhaps because Ive always been "weird" to some I tend to view it differently.

I've been termed as 'eccentric' by some friends before. I'm 18, drive a 76' VW Bus, listen to a lot of prog rock, have long(er) hair, play fretless bass, and yet am generally very conservative politically. I guess I'm a strange mix of a multitude of things, haha.

I think we all are a mixed bag, that's why I don't like catergorizing people. Hey we might not agree on some things , wait a minute a 76 bus? conservative politically? well at least you have longish hair even if your bus always breaks down sometimes. :hiding: :p

The conservative VW bus driver/long hair haver is the result of being the son of an ex-hippie who owns a small business, haha. Mystery revealed! And actually my old bus is pretty reliable. It initially had some issues, but once the big things got ironed out its been a great car! Its amazingly practical actually. I've fit 2 upright basses, an amp, an electric bass, a couple bags, a passenger and a box of cds all in it while still getting around 20 mpg (not the best, but my alternative is a 20056 GMC that can't hold that much and gets 8 mpg). And being it's a Westy the look on people's faces when they learn my car has a sink in it is priceless, haha.

Yeah that's it in the proper usage.

To many people assume that eccentric people are simply clueless to what is normal, that is far too often totally absurd. Truth is many eccentric people, tend to be far more socially aware.

Which is why they actively try to work outside of the norm.

At some point in the past, musicians, artists, activist etc, were all considered eccentric, it wasn't a sign of them being weird but simply in a another level of living.
