What makes it your bass?

Lots of dents and scratches from years of use.

And then there is the drunk woman that was dancing on stage next to my bass (on a stand) at a gig one night. She stumbled and broke the pick guard at the output jack. I cut off part of the pick guard and replaced it with another piece of plastic. The bass works fine, just looks odd.

I went through 7 Rickenbacker 4004 models before finding “the one” I love the feel of the best.
Several mods (wiring, pickup, hardware accessories) make it even more personal and unique.

There are millions of ps, and js and string rays, Rick’s, danos, foderas, wals, Warwick’s, Yamahas, Ibanez, , etc. What makes it yours? A particular dead spot? A rattle? A bit of wear only you could have put there.? What makes it yours?
First, I only play RondoMusic Hadean violin/Hofner style 21" scale bass ukes, plus have modifications and paint that I choose, done by Eric's Guitar Repair Shop and Pat Wilkins Finishes. Eric replaces the limited function floating piezo bridge with an all metal fully adjustable bridge that has a pickup in each saddle, and ads an on/off slide switch so I can leave my wireless pod plugged in. Pat is one of the best finishers in the country. I've used both of them for years and will not go anywhere else.

I transferred the neck from my other project bass which was on Geddy Lee Mexican body unto a nitro MJT Ash body which was made 10 years or so ago but it has reliced naturally. I like the natural finish, but best of all the sound. With the original bent plate bridge it was 7.4 bs and now 7.6 or so with the Leo Quan that I had for almost 30 years. I also have a BT2 D-tuner. on it and if I took that off it would probably be even lighter. Has Seymour Duncan Antiquity II. Needs nothing in the tone department. I was thinking to put the Barts I got but I will keep it as is, and live with the slight hum. Got the loaded body from a cool TB'er. Everything on the headstock are hipshot including the oversized string retainer. May get an ultralite D-extender since I have Ultralites on the rest. I like the bent plate bridge alright but I palm mute a lot and want something more comfortable so may get a B type hipshot down the road but for now the old BA does is fine. That thing is heavy.

It's the bass that makes you play until the wee ours of the morning. A very singing quality in the solo region and just a slight wolf tone on the C# on G. Growly lows. . And I am very partial to ebony necks. The neck is a P and in a few months I had it has become really playable and settled. It feels well played like my oldest bass. Already did an improv gig with it and it was well loved.

I call it the Esperanza Bajo -- the Hope bass. Pics taken at 3 AM after getting lost in it for like 4 hours.

Simplicity is best and this is it.

And this is my oldest bass. Bill Bartolini made me a filter preamp with a piezo buffer. It has piezos under the extender fretboard and bridge. Definitely unique, travelled the world and the neck cracked twice, Tuned in fifths currently. The "pickguard" is there because the wood got damaged when I lived in Greece and that's how it was repaired, The electronics are definitely ahead of it;s time because this has been like this since 1989

...Nov 11th...

Riis
The birthday of a former girlfriend in the early '80s.

But I found the perfect rounds ( TI Jazz) , and have learned to appreciate what it brings to the table.
It’s a nice change of pace . The B sting is glorious !!
I really need to get a set of those for my fretted Martin Keith Elfin 5 (the fretless one has TI Jazz Flats on it).

Most of the basses I have owned over the decades have/had been modded by me in some way or other (some more drastic than others), but the one that I can consider truly my own is the 4004L SPC that was made for me by RIC.

I have Schaller bridges on my Schecter Stiletto Studios...no mods required, and yet I've seen no one else do this. Gives my basses WICKEDLY low action. There's also one of said basses wearing a Mac Sabbath sticker (HIGHLY recommended...very entertaining and funny Sabbath-McDonald's theme band).
