what Mic do you use when recording your bass cabinets?

I typically DI bass - HOWEVER, when I have recorded bass with a mike, I've gotten good results with a Kel Audio HM-1 condensor, a Sennheiser 421 dynamic, and the good, old-fashioned SM57 (although this last was for a 'lead' bass line that was sort of guitar-esque - not sure how well it would work on 'traditional' bass.)

Thanks for all the opinions thus far. Firstly, I will mention this just because it's come up in most posts, I do use a DI when recording, I use a boss LS-2 and split my signal where on goes to my Bassman and the other goes to my Tech 21 Landmark (which I use as a DI).

So the best results I've received was when I was at a high end place and I set up my bass player (in a band that I play guitar in) with an MD 441 and an RE20 combined with the DI. I can probably afford an RE20 but it's going to have to wait.

Given my current mic cabinet I may try to use a SM57 combined with my Carvin Tube condenser (may give the tube mic the punch it's lacking). I also have a Sennhesier E935 that has a great low mid response on vocals so it would be interesting to try that mic a well.

You just hit it with the RE20 (RE27). It's the best for recording bass (IMO/IME), and it's also a damn good vocal mic (and VO mic if you get those kinds of gigs). It'll also does a respectable job of recording guitar amps/cabs, and is quite possibly the best kick mic too.

It's one of those mics that becomes your favorite in a hurry once you've heard/used it. I love my RE27 for nearly everything (more top end than the RE20).

If you want something really affordable try a Blue Kickball. Phantom powered dynamic, under $200 with a bass cut/boost switch. I bought one when MF or someone else was clearing them out online for $50 and I've used it to record bass here and there (usually use a Shure SM7 or EV RE20) and it sounds good.

I'm sure everyone will disagree with me but, I'll take a 58 over a 57 any day for low end work. I know 57's are supposed to be a "utility" mic but they seem to get real wobbly in the low end.

I too found the Beta 52 to be quite bland and unexciting sounding.

Hmmm. I thought that the 57 and 58 had the same cartridge. I was under the impression that they were the same mic with the 58 having some foam in front of the cartridge to help absorb pops when being used with vocals. I was under the impression that their frequency responses were essentially the same. I'd love for someone to clarify for me.

When I've had my cab mic'd, they usually used a 421. That's been the same deal live and in the studio. I have seen a 57 on my cab on at least one occasion.

Yeah thats correct (though its capsule, not cartridge ). The shield on a 58 does make a little difference to the response though >

In the average home studio there will be much bigger concerns than the difference between these two though!

You could try to research what mic your Behringer's design was based on and try to find one of those used.
