FWIW, rather than a DI, I typically take the mic'd line through two different chains in parallel (WA47-Brick-1176 clone; VC3Q paralleled from the throughput of the Brick). Me, I then like to do the Andy Wallace thing with the VC3Q track, using it for a blended-in exaggerated EQ'd bottom.
