Looks easy to use and cool to me, but I have no other corporate allegiances, so maybe that affects my judgment
I have a 60GB iPod photo, and I'd buy one again in a second if anything happened to it. I have had no problems with iTunes and for ease of use the iPod interface beats anything else out there. I've got 7000+ songs on mine, but I'll probably run out of CDs before it fills up.
I agree that the stock headphones are pretty useless, but all the complaints about lack of bass output stop when you get some good isolating headphones. I have the Etymotic ER-4P and they're well worth the additional investment IMO, especially if you get them on sale. For a bit less money, the ER-6 is a great alternative.

Well, I have used the iPods, which I think set the industry standard because of the ingenious design, and have studied some ID so I commented it based on the pictures and experience with other 'generic' players. That's why I noted that it "probably" does, nothing certain mind you.
You are right though, I don't have any real experience with the player and it actually might be good - and possibly those things you prefer count more. Preferences are always subjective, as are comments
