What PA cabs?

I need PA speakers/cabs for our band. I just need them for vocals/light guitar. Also, not for big clubs, just smaller settings and (mostly) for practicing. Not looking to spend a lot, but have some money for them. Just not high-end money. Plus, it's just for small gigs, so no dual 15" huge ones are even necessary.

What does everyone think of these? Link Removed I could only get one right now, but add another later possibly.


Anyone feel free to move this whenever and wherever you want. I didn't know where to put it if it's a "cab", but not bass cab really.

I bought a Peavey P15-P a few weeks back and it sounds great. Loud, too! Powered cab pushes 270w, we didn't turn it up past 1 1/2 at a practice with bass/drums/guitar. Good experience at the local GC, paid $349. If you can, hear one before you buy.

What kind of pa are you gonna push them with?

I'm going out of a mixer, then into half or all of my Crest LT1000. So, between 450 and 1300w of power.

Hey.. just yesterday I bought a Carvin PM15 (unpowered) 400watts continuous, with 15" and a big molded horn. This speaker of course is bi-amp capable with some 'mild' tunable functions on it. I added it directly to the bass backline at church. The price was $179.99 each. Built like a tank brother.

Another good choice would be EV SX200.
The band I'm in has used ElectroVoice PA cabinets for last 12 years - with no blown woofers.
If you get EV make sure it does not have an "E" in the model number.
EV is a great company but they sneak in Eminence woofers without making this clear to the customers. EV makes great drivers so when I buy EV I want it to have an EV-made driver.

I would recommend self-powered cabs. My dad has a set of tri-amped, self-powered mackies that are unbelievably clear and loud. The drawback is that the internal amps add weight.

I've had good luck with the yamaha (I forget what series they are, but the monitors are sm12V, so the "mains" versions of these")

I think they run around $300 ea. We use them for practice and throw vox, acustic and elec. guitar and sometimes some keys.

Hmm... Well that's a very wide variety. Which is what I've found. It seems to me that as long as it's quality, the speakers really don't matter that much. JBL seems to be popular in addition to all these suggestions. I'm still debating powered vs. non-powered, so keep the suggestions coming, thanks!

take a look at the JBL JRX12 "monitor" speakers, they are compact and lightweight (40lbs) and work pretty nicely. I've got a set of these being used as mains just for vocals and rythm guitar for my band. They run 300 new but I found some deals through ebay ended up paying about 220 each for them new (probably b-stock though but they're JBL so they should last a while).

+1 on JBL JRX series. Yorkville's are also great for 12's and 15's on tripods. EV and Peavey are 2nd choices IMO compared to JBL and Yorkville. I would recommend AGAINST self powered speakers. They are heavyer, not as versatile, and if one of the components break (speaker, amp, x-over, etc...) you loose the whole thing. I,ve done gigs without PA support, and equipment problems (our PA), where we used half of my bass power amp powering the speakers because the PA amp died. Also, you can more easely upgrade with traditional than self powered.

I would recommend the above...not the originals but the second generation (hence G2). I would then match it with a passive Mackie mixer.

We have had great luck w/ the Yamaha Club V Speakers. $329 ea. and handle 500 watts ea. rms, 1000 watts peak. Make vocals sound great and we bring bass, bass drum, and lead guitar thru them too.

I own several JRX 12" Monitor/Cabs. Sound good, no problems and fairly cheap.

I also own 4 JBL EON 1500 non powered cabinets. 2-way 15" cabs. Very light, sound very good and can also be found cheap on close out. (discontinued)

I have several Peavey PR10 and PR12 cabinets. Also light weight. Sound just as good as the JRX12 and are lighter. Very durable. Only have 1/4 inch jacks though. Very good value. They take a lot of abuse and keep going.

Out of them all the Peavey PR series is the best value. Out of sound quality the EON 1500 sound the best but handle the least amount of power.

I think the Yamaha Club series is pretty hard to beat in the "bang for your buck" category. I think they are a step up from the Peavey SP series, although the only thing I've really side-by-sided is the 15" main cabs.

$300/each new for 12" woofers, $350 for 15" woofers from MF and others. You see them used on (local or on the bay) regularly.

I just picked up a pair of SM15IV 15" monitors off the bay for $400. All the monitors have pole mounts, so you can use them as mains on sticks if you want.

They also make a non-ratfurr version, but they are harder to find, especially used. I hate ratfurr, although every cab I own is covered in it.
