First rule of live sound:
If you see DJ written in the ad, run from it... Honestly, it's all crap...
+1 on the DJ stuff. In general, I would avoid it.
I'm far from any kind of expert on PA equipment, but I have put together some cheapo systems for bands that I played with over the years- I've had good luck with used Peavey, Yamaha, and Yorkville PA equipment.
Some friends of mine have even had good luck with Behringer powered speakers- they bought 6 to use for monitors and mains, 2 died pretty quickly- I think in a warranty period- the rest keep chugging along. I think they were the Behringer B215A cabs.
Anyway, good luck in your PA hunt. It seems like there's a lot of stuff out there. If you shop around I think you can find something that you can use for quite a while and expand/improve on it as needed.
