Google sent me an email that in their infinite wisdom they've decided to nerf both the charge speed and battery capacity of my phone, a Pixel 6a. This is my excited face :oops:

This happened to coincide with a sale on Google phones at my phone provider. This is my unsuspicious face :rolleyes:

I took tha bait and ordered a new Pixel 9, with a myriad of new AI "features" which I assume I will promptly disable when I receive the phone in a couple days.

I planned to use my current phone for several more years because I spent what was, for me, a lot of money on it. This time I spent even more money, but should hopefully be getting a lot more phone out of it and again, hopefully, several years of service life.

But there goes all my gear money for the month.

What are you on these days? How was your upgrade experience?

Samsung Galaxy S23. I've had it close to a year now, doing ok except the charge / USB connecter fell back into the housing and is useless. Have to charge and transfer data wirelessly. Crap quality for such an expensive bit of gear.

I also have a Pixel 9, the Pro XL. I wanted the smaller one, but this bigger screen is easier on my eyes.
I turned off all the AI junk I could find too, and that took a while. Google keeps turning it back on. I guess because they feel sorry for me? :D
I hold on to my phones too. I upgraded from the Pixel 3 when I got this 9. I agree, it is a lot of money, and money I am not going to toss around every year or two so I can have whatever is the latest. I'm hoping this one gets me through to when I qualify for the senior plans and those old school phones for seniors. I work in technology and cybersecurity, but this AI junk is for the birds.

The big screen iPhone 12.

I had an iPhone 7 Plus- Around the time the 12 came out, I had myself convinced that my 7+ was slow and the battery was near dead. I threw down and forked out for the fancy big 12 and it was... ...a phone. About the same as my old 7+ as far as usable "speed" and the battery life was not appreciably greater considering it was a 4 year newer phone with a larger battery.

Additionally around this time I had a 6S+, then an XS Max for work phones. My work phone now I think is a 13. But it's little... I need readers to use it.


The 12 Pro Max was a great phone, it's still a great phone, but when the iPhone 15 came out with the 'titanium' I started to get all "oooh... I need a new phone" then I remembered just how underwhelmed I was getting a phone that cost twice as much. My phone does what I need it to do, and it's a nice phone.

Yup. I use my phone for phone calls and text messages primarily. Since I have so much downtime at work I use it to browse TB during the day. I barely need a smartphone, and even now only because my work requires a few apps.

I don't see my use changing much, but with the battery life cut that's coming, my phone won't make it a whole day without a charge. I suppose the inconvenience is too much...

iPhone 7.

It has been a good reliable phone until just about a month ago when the battery would no longer hold a charge. It took it to the local Apple store and they told me they could replace the battery but that the cost of $70 would be worth more than the phone (which evidently is worth nothing even if fixed). Being a cheap person, I went ahead and had them replace the battery.

The phone is back to working like it did, but wouldn't you know it, several apps that I rely on stopped working a few days after the battery replacement. These apps require a newer operating system than my old phone (with the new battery) supports. Go figure. I'll get a new iPhone when the next generation is released in September.

Still clinging to my SE II. It’s several years old now.

When my iPhone 5e died after 7 years I wanted the smallest phone available. My needs are simple - I don’t need my phone to be a rocket ship - and my options at the time were the 12 mini for about $800 or the slightly larger SE II for just under $200 (part of my service plan with Verizon).

The SE was already more than twice as powerful as my 5e had been so the choice was easy. I’ll use this until it stops working, just as I did the 5e.

Honestly, I wish future options could be even smaller but they all trend bigger. I don’t like carrying a flat screen TV around with me.

Currently Nokia G60 I believe. Last few phones have all been Nokia or Motorola. Both companies keep their Android a bit bare bones which I like. Guess you do too if Pixel appeals. I like to keep the OS fairly recent for security purposes. But I don't game so I can meet both requirements with a modest spend.
