What Pickup is this at the Neck?

E-mailed bartolini , they did not disclose any details . and modulus claims they only provide a "custom neck" for jeff's basses and also said the headstock of the modulus neck was according to his specifications ( his basses have fender jazz style headstock not the original genesis headstock ) , they also say the bass body and and the electronics was set up by Mike Lull .

Bartolini has email now? They had stopped using email when they got a virus once...

So maybe Lull would know.

However i was browsing through the SGD luthiere website and found this

its probably the same dimension of the Pup at the extreme neck position in jeff's modulus . and woah the SGD sidewinder SW4-HB , has a fat and meaty tone.

No, that pickup looks larger than a guitar humbucker. Humbuckers are more rectangular, and that looks more square. Also the logos are centered on Bart humbuckers.

They used to make a pickup called the HA-4S. It might be that size. It was 1.5 X 3".

Here's a Jazz neck and HB case side by side.

Now here they are superimposed on top of Jeff's bass with the Jazz scaled to match. You can see that the neck pickup is larger and the mounting screws are also farther apart.

But the guitar sized humbucker would work fine there, especially the Sidewinder since the blade is the full width of the case.

How do y'all know that it isn't Barto's standard dual- or quad-coil MM pickup (1-7/8" x 4") or W4 soapbar (1-3/4" x 4-1/16")?

The pickup mounting screws are covered by the pickguard, but the Barto drawing of the MM shows an offset logo like the pics. And really, wouldn't a punchy MM-style pickup make a lot of sonic sense in that position?

It is a similar size to a MM or W4, however, the mounting screws are not covered up. There is one on each side of the pickup the way a regular humbucker is set up.

On this bass the screws are not visible, but you can see the brass mounting bracket showing on the right side. It's probably screwed down to the wood:

I think it's a custom pickup. Bill used vacuum forming for those covers, so it wouldn't be that hard to whip one up. It could also be based on a MM pickup.

Also just because a pickup looks like a MM doesn't mean it sounds like one. He might have a wide aperture humbucker wound to sound deep and bassy like many Bartolini pikcups.

You can put all kinds of non standard things into a standard pickup cover. I do it every day.

I believe it's the old Bartolini replacement for the Guild humbuckers. I'm basing that on the measurements from the two old Bart/Hi-A catalogs I have.

They started with "GB"; so for a humbucker it was a GBC. The GB was 1-7/8" X 3".

They also had the "long scale" soapbar (1.5" X 3"). They were They started with the number "4", so it was 4T, 4C, etc.
