What should I get that's the most cost effective?

I have been playing for about 3 years now and a few of the bands I'm in are about to start gigging, but with my current gear (A Carvin B40 and a 100 watt Crate keyboard amp) I am unable to modify the sound of my instrument very much. I think that a multi-effects pedal might solve this problem, but there are so many choices. I play mostly classic rock, alternative, indie rock, blues, jazz, progressive metal, and a bit of pop.

Honestly, save your money for a better amp. Effects are great, I love them, but a good amp will be a better investment because you'll sound better with OR without effects. Plus if you get an amp with good EQ controls, there's a bunch of tone variety right there, and some amps have switchable overdrive for those rock tunes.

It is a good thing that there are so many choices, which one is right for you is hard to suggest not knowing what your expectations and budget are. These days every make is quite good to keep up with the competition but they all have their own niche.
Going used is a good way to save a few bucks
