What should my first bass be?

The SUB is a great bass for the money. If you are fond of it, I'd suggest that. Go with what you like, not because some other people say a different bass is better. This is your bass, not theirs. There will always be time in the future to buy more basses.
I like buying used if I can. I can get more bass for the buck, and I won't take as big of a hit if I sell it down the line. Check out the classifieds here, and reverb as well.
I would say a Squier Classic Vibe P Bass. They are great basses and not just for the money!
I agree with the chorus suggesting you play around and then buy what you like. A lot of folks will suggest a P or J, and for good reason, but a variety of basses have good tone, and there are a lot of tone shaping amps and pedals to add depth and variety. Buying what you like will ensure you keep at it, and as you develop your tastes may change, evolve and relapse.
There are a lot of good options. A Squier Precision or Jazz that is well set up won't steer you wrong. Another good option would be either the Ibanez Gio/SR series or the Yamaha TRBX174. I also used to have a Luna Tattoo bass that I thought was pretty good and I regret selling it.
Try to play any instrument in person before purchasing, if possible given the circumstances. Most importantly, go with what feels and sounds good to you!

Fender Vintera or Performer Mustang bass; short-scale with built-in thump and warmth!
If budget is a problem, you may consider the equivalent instruments of the Squier Classic Vibe (CV) series, as many have suggested.

A p bass. Any p bass... the p bass is very hard to get wrong. Even cheap p basses sound good because p basses just sound good naturally... it’s just the design of the pickup.
Just get it over and done with...
You may experiment with other basses here and there, but you’ll always go back to the p bass.
