What state should I move to?

I won't say whether to move here or not, but here's New Hampshire:

Cost of living is pretty high. Not California-high, but probably a lot higher than you're used to in the Midwest.

Unemployment is relatively low, though no place is good right now. But we're under 6% when the country is over 9%.

White Mountains in our north, not far at all to go. A little beach on our east, small but nice (water is cold though). Boston to the south for big city, about 1 - 1 1/2 hours from most towns. Most of our towns are in the 15-25,000 pop range, Manchester is 100,000. That's where all the bands are -- locals call it Manchvegas.

Just my personal preference, I've lived in quite a few places, Austin, Boise, Miami,Philadelphia, Omaha, Charleston South Carolina, Jensen Beach Florida, Spokane, McCall Idaho, and spent extended time in Baltimore, Orlando, Tampa, Las Vegas, and I find where I am now, Virginia Beach to be the best combination and compromise of everything I want. The huge military presence stabilizes the economy, the housing is very affordable (3 bedroom within walking distance of the beach just listed for $330k in my neighborhood), beaches, short drive to mountains, great schools for your kids, D.C. Right up the road, good weather, lots of history, pleasant people (mostly). You could do much worse....

Saw on the news tonight that a company in Chicago is having a hard time hiring machinists. The lady they interviewed said she put three ads in different papers, but very few applications and resumes.

As You know, Mike, I love living in Chicago. Not cheap, but not too expensive, tons of things to do, a very "livable" big city (much more so than NYC, as much as I enjoy visiting it) and job opportunities are certainly around. I have no idea how far away snowboarding places are.:D
