they are fat, meaty, not "brittle"

A few observations…..first off the Boomers , with all those low mids, really fill in on that track. Secondly your playing was outstanding! Very nice

All of them. But the tone that the classic early 70's funk basses had is probably Fender flats on a J-bass.

I would say your technique accounts

for most of the sound, but strings do play a factor. I’ve always found that flats made me feel like playing funk most. Currently I’ve taken a break from EBCFs and have been enjoying La Bella’s.

well, try Prosteel, they are harshly bright, screaming highs and high-mids.

when I got my 70’s MIJ Yamaha pulser p bass it had a set of DR STRINGS on.

I really liked them. I prefer playing fingerstyle funk.
Like you said, DR strings here in the uk are very hard to source.

I’ve tried rotosound swing66 (a classic combo for funk) and d’addario xl nickels.

I like them all. Hard to pick a clear fav tbh.

As you are uk try elite strings. They are the bass centre brand.

I rented a 1980 fender p bass to compare with my bass. It had a 2 year old set on. They was brighter than what I had on.
