What Strings Should I Get?

i want comfortable and long lasting good strings that sound good for my Yamaha RBX170.

the default ones that were on the bass wen i bought it 4 years ago are terrible.

If i change the strings will my bass still sound the same?

Your bass will most definitely sound different with new strings if they haven't been changed for 4 years. The ultimate comfortable/long lasting strings are flats, but you may not like the lack of "zing" that rounds have. I'd say a decent set of nickel strings (rotosound or ernie ball hybrids) will sound great and feel good to you. They should last longer than steels, but probably not another 4 years.

nickle round wounds. Gauge wise I don't really know, I haven't switched around enough to know.

You'll like the feel and sound of new strings. First time I replaced my strings from the stock my bass felt brand new.

My favorite are Rotosound Nexus strings, they're nickel rounds with a polymer coating on them. The coating makes them last longer w/o going dead (and its looks awesome too).

All in all it depends on what style music you play, Steel roundwounds are really bright, Nickel rounds are a bit mellower but can rust, ground wounds/half wounds are rounds that are ground down to be flatter and they are mellower than nickel, and there are flats which are the mellowest sounding.

I use the house-brand of strings from [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] . On my five string Spector, I use custom guages that work out really great and an even tone across the board. They're also very reasonably priced! Go to their site and in the left menu, look for BULK STRINGS. Then click on bass and pick your fav's, nickel or stainless. I get nickel, because they are easier on my fingers and the frets.

Guages: 120, 105, 90, 70, 50

If you've got a 4-string, simply remove the 120. The 120 on the 5 string actually gives the bass more punch rather than using a 125 or 128. The thicker strings tend to get a bit muddy in some clubs. I've had good success with the 120.

I have attached a screen shot of my order for you to see an example. You get 6 strings in each pack of bulk string order. So if you figure this out... the order total is about $87, but then divide that by 6 and you are paying around $14 a pack!! Great deal, don't you agree?
